Weekly Address: It’s Time to Give Families Access to Paid Sick Leave

In this week’s address, President Obama discussed the importance of ensuring that American families have access to paid leave. Today, millions of Americans do not have access to paid sick leave and have to face tough choices when their families face illness – choices that could risk their jobs or their health. The President has repeatedly called on Republicans in Congress to pass a law guaranteeing most workers the chance to earn seven days of paid sick leave each year.

To this day, no action has been taken in the Republican Congress. But, that hasn’t stopped the President from taking action where he can to help more Americans access paid sick time, and starting January 1st, federal contractors will be required to give their employees working on new federal contracts up to seven paid sick days each year. That’s because paid leave isn’t something that just nice to have – it’s a must have.

And even at the state and local level, like they have been trying to do here in Philly, folks must push for getting some kind of paid leave for those who don't have it. It's a disgrace when you have workers have to come in sick or lose a day's pay... meanwhile they often infect everyone else around them, more so in that many who work these types of jobs usually have to get to the job on public transit (further increasing the potential for mass infection).

I got sick because someone else came into work sick.

3. What about letting people draw on their social security for such things though if

you cant get legislation to force companies to provide it?

4. 7 days paid sick leave and overtime after 8 hours worked in a day should be federal law

for all workers.

5. Another thing is scheduling.

All employers should have to give the employees their schedules 2 weeks in advance and employers should be required to give the employee a minimum of 12 hours before their next shift or they have to pay overtime from when the employee clocks back in until the end of their shift.
