BEAVERCREEK, Ohio A federal investigation is getting closer to a possible indictment of a Beavercreek police officer.
The parents of John Crawford III and their attorney met with top-ranking federal investigators and U.S. Attorney General Loretta Lynch in Washington on Friday.
The family's attorney, Michael Wright, said the meeting was a status report on the investigation's progress involving the death of Crawford.
Crawford was shot and killed by a Beavercreek police officer on Aug. 5, 2014, while shopping at Walmart.
The 22-year-old from Fairfield had picked up a pellet gun off a shelf. He was carrying it in the store while talking on the phone.

(6,385 posts)tsk, tsk, tsk...you'll never get that job in law enforcement with that kind of poor judgement. Obviously one is a threat to the life, liberty and happiness of everyone around them. The other is just a couple guys being guys.
Unfortunately, there are probably dozens of incidents like you described that are considered so benign, they don't even get reported.
World's gotta change.

Whether they had a call about a possible active shooter or not, the cops should have noticed that there was no commotion in the store when they arrived and that the supposed shooter was talking on his cell phone and using the gun as a crutch. Not only was there no cause for deadly force to be used, but the officer who fired didn't give Crawford any time to comply.

(6,385 posts)I'd love to see this be the beginning of a consistent pattern. That would be a good first step in having local cops know that when they pull that trigger, it isn't going to be their mom's cousin, or some neighbor's brother in law (or whatever friend of a friend) over in the prosecutor's office deciding the next step.
We should be so lucky.

(3,580 posts)There have been some police shootings where I think ok maybe the video doesn't really capture everything the cop is seeing but this was so clear cut absolutely no reason to react the way the cops did.
John Crawford was doing nothing at all to justify his murder.

(12,437 posts)I do hope this makes it to trial. Poor John Crawford was murdered for being comfortable in this racist society. Yes, it was a dumb thing to do, but he never posed a threat...he was walking around with an off the shelf toy gun....talking on his cell phone. The Officers NEVER cleared and secured the scene...just shot him down...then asked questions.

(1,727 posts)possible active shooter in a busy store, but failed to notice the fact that everybody seemed perfectly calm and was carrying on as if there wasn't a problem when they arrived.
Either those guys were incredibly poorly trained, or they were looking for an excuse, any excuse, to shoot somebody.
