Kaine, Pence get into a bitter dispute over Trump's comments about undocumented Mexican Immigrants

The two vice-presidential candidates got into a bitter exchange about an excerpt from the speech that launched Donald Trump’s presidential campaign, in which Trump said that undocumented immigrants from Mexico were “rapists” and “bringing crime.”

“He’s not a polished politician, like you and Hillary Clinton,” said Gov. Mike Pence (Ind.), Trump’s running mate, in the only vice-presidential debate of the season.

“He is showing you who is he is,” said Sen. Tim Kaine (Va.) a few moments later, saying that Trump’s comments about Mexicans showed his true character.

“Senator, you whipped out that Mexican thing again,” Pence said. It was, indeed, one of several times that Kaine had brought up that remark – a calculated effort, playing to Hispanic voters.

“Can you defend it?” Kaine interrupted.

"...that Mexican thing" is wildly offensive. Pence's role was to defend Trump, who wants to build a wall along the southern U.S. border.

Any criticism of such a proposal is deeply valid, but Pence tried to dismiss it by reducing the subject to a hackneyed debate tactic by Kaine.

I don't think he succeeded.

Wow, I couldn't watch it, but I did see a clip of Kaine giving a litany of the racist, sexist, and other offensive comments nice and clearly, which needs to be hammered home every day.
