German police say arrested Syrian bomb plot suspect
Source: AFP
BERLIN (AFP) - German police said Monday they have arrested a Syrian man suspected of plotting a jihadist bomb attack, after a massive manhunt lasting almost two days.
"We've succeeded, really overjoyed: the terror suspect (Jaber) Albakr was arrested overnight in Leipzig," police said on Twitter about the 22-year-old.
Police had on Saturday found several hundred grams of an "explosive substance more dangerous than TNT" hidden in Albakr's apartment and said that "even a small quantity ... could have caused enormous damage".
Local media reported that the material was TATP, the homemade explosive that was used by jihadists in the Paris and Brussels attacks.

(8,303 posts)According to reports from SDZ, NDR and WDR found in the residence 500 grams of already mixed explosive and about another kilo of chemicals intended for bomb construction. Also igniters and components, that, according to the initial assessment, could have been used to build pipe bombs. By report the Syrian was in contact with IS, also a possible target was apparently under discussion namely the Berlin Airport.
There are multiple people in custody, but the top suspect is a registered Syrian refugee who entered the country last year - plans are in the making for a more thorough evaluation of refugee applicants, but how that is possible one is left to imagine. All the stuff earlier in the article about a closer collaboration with foreign intelligence services won't accomplish much in Syria.

(24,692 posts)Jörg Michaelis, president of the police in Saxony, said that Mr. Bakr had been arrested in Leipzig, in the apartment of fellow Syrians who had recognized the man from photographs circulated by the authorities over the weekend.
The Syrians tied up the suspect and took a photograph of him with a cellphone, which one of them took to a nearby police station, before urging officers to come and arrest him immediately.
Our colleagues with the Leipzig police were able to seize him because his fellow Syrians had already bound and detained him, Mr. Michaelis said. He declined to provide additional details about the Syrian who led them to Mr. Bakr, citing concerns about his safety.

(8,303 posts)I gather this info was leaked by the police because politicians were talking about giving them a medal.
The fact that the man hanged himself in jail while he was under suicide watch, according to his lawyer, brings up further questions.
This story keeps getting stranger.

(5,522 posts)Their response is to try and attack their host country and bring war to it. I don't understand the mentality - if you want to fight a war, stay in Syria and fight. Instead, they say, "Thanks for saving me. Now, prepare to die!" You would have to be an especially vile person to do such a thing.

There have been NUMEROUS cases of refugees reporting other refugees to the police for militant/suspicious activity.
