China and Malaysia sign deals on navy vessels

Malaysia has agreed to buy four Chinese naval vessels and pledged with Beijing to handle South China Sea disputes bilaterally, a Chinese official said on Tuesday, in what could be China's latest counter to U.S. influence in the region.
The vessels are known as littoral mission ships, small craft that operate close to shore. Two will be built in China and two in Malaysia, Malaysian state media reported after a meeting between Chinese Premier Li Keqiang and his visiting counterpart Prime Minister Najib Razak.
Last week, Malaysia's defense ministry said in a posting on social media that the country would sign a contract to purchase patrol vessels from China during Najib's week-long visit that began on Sunday, but the post was later removed. The move marks Malaysia's first significant defense deal with China at a time of rising tension in the South China Sea.
"Leaders of the two sides agreed to further advance the proper settlement of the South China Sea issue with dialogue through a bilateral channel," Chinese Vice Foreign Minister Liu Zhenmin told reporters at Beijing's Great Hall of the People where Li and Najib met.

Nice to see that Malaysia and China are agreeing to work for a peaceful resolution of their conflicting territorial claims in the South China Sea.
I bet arms manufacturers are just a little bit miffed.
Give peace a chance.

Better for a fascist state to benefit than non-state-run companies. It's the latter that are the real enemies ... Just ask any Chinese protester or Russian GULag denizen. Government is always your friend.

I am back living in China because my wife is mainlander. Does that count on knowing about China and the Chinese?
I lived in Korea for two years as well. Does that count?

(2,208 posts)but for a sweeping statement like "Most non-Malays in Malaysia hate Najib with a passion already", um, no -- your personal life experience isn't sufficient basis for me to take it as gospel truth.
Do you have any voting analysis or polls to validate that statement? Any news articles I could read? If not, I will keep an open mind.

(3,839 posts)But I'll leave you to your opinions. I refuse to engage with someone who tells me that being in a country, reading their newspapers and speaking to their citizens means nothing to them.
Good day, sir or madame. This conversation is over.

That is an unfair characterization, I said your personal experience and opinion was not sufficient to validate a sweeping statement that you made: "Most non-Malays in Malaysia hate Najib with a passion already"
Many Republicans, for example, can say their experience in being in the US, reading the newspapers and speaking to other American should validate their poor opinions of, say, Barrack Obama. Do you see my point? If sweeping statements can't be back up by polls or election analysis, or media articles from non-partisan sources then they should not be accepted at face value as being the gospel truth.
We all form our opinions in our own information bubbles and shape them with our personal proclivities, that's why I asked for outside citation to buttress your broad statement.
Thanks for the discussion.
