Madison won't change immigrant policies if Donald Trump cracks down on 'sanctuary cities'

Madison city officials said Wednesday they will not change policies related to police interactions with immigrants in response to President-elect Donald Trumps campaign pledge to cancel federal funding to so-called sanctuary cities.
Mayor Paul Soglin and Police Chief Mike Koval also decried reports across the nation in the wake of Trumps victory last week of an uptick in hate-related incidents, including an anonymous letter a Fitchburg woman provided to police that gloated about Trumps victory, called a family with 11 adopted minority children race traitors, told the woman to go home and declared race wars are on.
Soglin said Madison will continue its present policies and wont waver from a commitment to protecting the respect and dignity of all people within the community.
This is a battle for every one of us, Soglin said. We have to speak out, we have to acknowledge when discrimination and hate take place..............................

(18,402 posts)Most of the mayors of the large cities have already pledged that they will remain "sanctuary cities": New York, Los Angeles, Philadelphia, Chicago, etc. etc.
It's good to know we have buffers between us and the new government.
Good for Madison for joining in.

(22,651 posts)Everything else, get stopped for a 'taillight out' or jay walking or the common police stop excuse, "you look like a suspect on my list" and that's it, freedom is over.
By the way in most states persons without papers can't even get a drivers license anymore. Or a personal major telephone account, a basic checking account, nothing. Usually legal friends and family help.
