School district kicks kids out of school they have been attending for two years

A parent in the Turner Unified School District says her kids aren't welcome. Roche Garcia, a mother of four, says the school system determined the family doesn't actually live within the district, even they eat and sleep five minutes away from classrooms.
"It's horrible. I don't want anyone to go through this. It affects kids' lives," Garcia said.
Garcia says her kids are victims, because the school they've attended for two years, Junction Elementary School, doesn't want them anymore. A school district spokesperson says they've asked Garcia to prove she lives within the district, but they're convinced she and her kids don't qualify.
Garcia's two children who are school-aged want to go to school, but instead, they've spent the past three weeks at home. A school district spokesperson confirmed an inspector working for the district saw Roche dropping off and picking up her children to catch the bus on two occasions.
"I was like, I don't understand. I've been living here two years. My kids have been attending this school for two years," Garcia said.

(10,890 posts)they'd have to eat the costs of educating students attending who can't prove they live in the district, also many districts don't provide bus service to students who live within a certain distance of the school even if they have to cross a busy street or there's no sidewalks

Any realty website can give you what district you belong to via your address. That is the only way it is determined, their addresses.

(26,060 posts)The story says she's living with her mother and since her name is not on the lease, she doesn't qualify. They could just put her name on the electric bill (or whatever) and that should work. I can't blame the district for this - they're only looking out for their funds which they need.

(40,021 posts)Even where I live in NY the district has been checking, why because of money the district shells out. Why should the taxpayers of XYZ school district pay for your kid when you don't even within its bounds.

(9,655 posts)You take anything that proves you are living at a certain address. Rent receipts, mortgage payments, light bills, heating bills, etc.
If the residence address of the bills are within the district, there should not be a problem. If you do not have any of these things, why not? More than likely you live outside of that school district and just want to send your children there.
Then you should attend the schools that your residence is actually in.

(2,926 posts)and these explanations may not be enough since it is only their word and that of those who can vouch. Clearly they must just be liars. Same rationale for those losers who can't get photo ID for whatever reason, it's easy enough isn't it.

(2,926 posts)I read the article linked. It states she is staying with her mother due to financial difficulties. She is not on the lease. The school is specifically asking for a lease in her name. She and her mother's word is not sufficient. If she has insufficient finances, no landlord will enter into a lease with her, and probably not allow her on her mothers lease as well (which as a general rule is good financial sense not to get their credit intertwined)

Others do not. This parent is like so many others, whining about not being allowed to do whatever she wants.
I see where she lives with her mom, so she should be good to go. She is not a whiner. She has a legitimate gripe.

(662 posts)So living with your mother in the school district and wanting your kids to go to school is "whining about not being allowed to do whatever she wants"?
Where should they go to school?

(37,748 posts)Like you, I'd pretend it's mere "whining" as well and maintain the pretense that the parent is simply attempting to "do whatever she wants" if it suited my narrative. Bias is great thing... even better when we rationalize and pretend the bias is critical thought.

(31,306 posts)where is this taking place?
i ask because my son went through elementary school on an interdistrict permit. it was true that the school he attended which was out of our district was also closer than the school he would have attended. but the biggest difference was the quality of education he received.
this was in hawthorne, CA.
