U.S. New Mexico Sens. Tom Udall and Martin Heinrich appealed Wednesday to President Barack Obama to take action to protect the safety of demonstrators protesting the Dakota Access pipeline.

Udall and Heinrich each wrote to the president citing examples of violence in North Dakota against Standing Rock Sioux Tribe members and demonstrators camping in the area, The Albuquerque Journal reported.

“The current situation at Camp Oceti Sakowin is unsustainable and dangerous to everyone involved,” Heinrich wrote in the letter posted on his website. “I implore you to work with the Corps of Engineers and the Department of Justice to de-escalate the violence at the camp.”

1. Help protect the demonstrators?

The demonstrators are mainly women and children. They have been blasted with sound canons that destroy your ear drum. They have been blasted with water canons in freezing temperatures. Planes and helicopters have been seen dropping something on the protesters, hopefully not insecticides. Drones are used to monitor and harass the protesters. They have been shot with rubber bullets, had dogs sic'd on them, percussion grenades used against them.
A storm has hit making the roads impassable, check points have been set up and anyone who tries to bring in food, or propane for heat is being stopped and fined $1,000.
It's way too late for protecting the protesters they have been assaulted. Obama should send in the National Guard to protect the protesters from the national guard.

A very big corporation owns the politicians and this corporation will not be stopped in its effort to make billions of dollars.

just good old fashioned crony capitalism, or does obama have a long(er) game in mind? whose thumb is on this scale?

it is just not like him to have to be dragged into this. we know he has already acted to intervene, but the army corps is clearly not on the same page as the president. which doesnt surprise me, as rife as our military is w rw assholes.

if i still believed in hope, i would wish that he is taking so long because he has people trying to sort out how to invoke the 1851 treaty. that puts an end to all this shit, and sets an example for how this country deals w the sovereign country within our borders in the 21st century.
the whole world is watching. were he to do this, he would strike a blow for indigenous rights everywhere.
but i suspect that is quite tangled. the blm conned many tribes out of their land. those contracts would have to be voided. there are likely many of them.
and perhaps this would force the whole sham of the blm to be accounted for, and i dont think we have time for that before jan 20.

but that is my hope for the outcome of all this, and as soon as is humanely possible.
my son is probably going to go there. he is currently wandering w his adopted circle. (not a drop of blood in him, but they love him anyway.) they are nakota people. they want to go, but their biggest concern is not putting a burden on the camp. they dont have a lot to offer, so they are hesitant to go. they are very sensitive to the whole hipster tourism thing that is happening. i hope some of those fools are the next hit by the water cannons, if there is a next time, but i doubt they will be anywhere near the front lines.

hopefully obama will be obama, and soon.
