Trump warns companies against trying to leave the country
As he touts a deal to keep Carrier jobs from going to Mexico, Trump promises to badger other companies tempted to move jobs overseas.

....
Were gonna have a lot of phone calls made to companies when they say theyre thinking about leaving this country because theyre not leaving this country, declared Trump, who spoke for roughly 15 minutes between a Carrier-branded lectern and a backdrop on a stage he also shared with an air conditioning unit.
Theyre not gonna leave this country, and the workers are gonna keep their jobs, he continued And they can leave from state to state and they can negotiate good deals with the states and all of that, but leaving the countrys gonna be very, very difficult.
....
Critics, however, warn that Trumps move could set a dangerous, unsustainable precedent. While, as Trump noted, families can enjoy their Christmas now that jobs at the plant are secure, Trumps deal is a hyperlocal agreement keeps a single plant open. While it saves those families from having to relocate and its workers from having to hunt for new jobs, its not a national solution to offshoring and automation.
Instead of a damn tax, the company will be rewarded with a damn tax cut. Wow! Vermont Sen. Bernie Sanders wrote a Washington Post op-ed. Hows that for standing up to corporate greed? Hows that for punishing corporations that shut down in the United States and move abroad? In essence, United Technologies took Trump hostage and won. And that should send a shock wave of fear through all workers across the country.

I hate to give that ******* any more attention, but "leaving the countrys gonna be very, very difficult" is a mighty strange thing for anyone to say.
Also, I see that the quotation marks have been stripped from the article by the new software.
"Going somewhere, Herr Von Trapp?"

(34,661 posts)preplanned dog and pony show. Understand it was planned by the Trump Campaign 18 months ago.
This was set up to give Trump and Pence street creed. Just another slap in Obama's face ,his opening remarks got two birds with one blast,he nailed Hillary and Obama with the same fire wall phrase.

(29,226 posts)United Technologies to continue to offshore more than 1,000 jobs, Trump will reportedly give the company tax and regulatory favors that the corporation has sought. Just a short few months ago, Trump was pledging to force United Technologies to pay a damn tax. He was insisting on very steep tariffs for companies like Carrier that left the United States and wanted to sell their foreign-made products back in the United States. Instead of a damn tax, the company will be rewarded with a damn tax cut. Wow! Hows that for standing up to corporate greed? Hows that for punishing corporations that shut down in the United States and move abroad? "
He is hitting tRump hard, gotta love it.

(35,437 posts)Using the power of the state to force a business to make decisions is Socialism in a nutshell.
So, the rebuke by free market Republicans in Congress and elsewhere should be stern and prompt. Should happen any time now. Any time.

(34,648 posts)He fans will instantly become socialists! I think 20000 dollar tax credits to those making under 100000 dollars should be the next thing we tell him he BETTER NOT DO OR ELSE! Then he will do it to show us how tough he is. And we win.

(1,237 posts)The majority of the jobs are still being shipped to Mexico and were handing a $90 billion dollar company $7 million of our tax dollars! How many of the 200k jobs at Carrier are returning to the US? He's rewarding company's that ship jobs out of the U.S.

(4,229 posts)Sounds like they were bribed to stay here.
However on the surface what he's saying and what he did will give him more support.
I can't remember a democratic president threatening companies who outsourced.
I don't think what he did is sustainable but this is pure gold for Trump and it upsets me that democrats haven't done the same.
Now the dem talking points would be:
Bernie saying "Who is the socialist now??"
The company who is not in any financial trouble and turning a profit was given MORE money.
How about dems introduce a bill to ban any company that outsources from getting gov't contracts??
We need to outbid Trump on this.

(1,237 posts)Made campaign promises threatening company's that outsource ,hands over $7million to a company as they outsource 1,300 jobs while he makes a pr stunt out of it. This would've destroyed any D's career, the media would be interviewing those 1,300 employees for the rest of their time in office or until resignation.

(12,448 posts)to Carrier as a bribe to keep SOME jobs in the country, then "warns" other companies that they'd better not leave? WTF? He's set a precedent and other large companies will demand their candy too.

So far these have all been weak threats. Seriously what is he going to do? How much shit at Walmart is not made in the USA? Why can't his dumb fuck supporters just not buy it?
