Warning issued for 'hazardous' tsunami waves after 7.7 earthquake off the Solomon Islands

An earthquake with a magnitude of 7.7 hit off the Solomon Islands at 4.38am, the U.S. Geological Survey said. The quake was initially reported to be of magnitude 8.0.

"Hazardous tsunami waves from this earthquake are possible within the next three hours along some coasts of Solomon Islands, Vanuatu, Papua New Guinea, Nauru, New Caledonia, Tuvalu and Kosrae," the Pacific Tsunami Warning Center said.

New Zealand is no longer under a tsunami threat after a powerful 7.8 earthquake struck off the Solomon Islands this morning.

The earthquake has sparked a widespread tsunami alert throughout the South Pacific.

Damaging waves are still expected to hit Solomon Islands, Papau New Guinea and Vanuatu.
