School boss changes ruling, bans Confederate flag clothes

Source: Associated Press

Updated 6:55 pm, Friday, December 9, 2016

PLUM, Pa. (AP) — A school district where a black student was upset that a classmate was allowed to wear a sweatshirt depicting the Confederate flag said on Friday that after more students went to class wearing Confederate flag clothing it must be banned.

Earlier Friday, Plum Borough School District Superintendent Timothy Glasspool had told the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review that a high school student had a right to wear a sweatshirt depicting a Confederate flag even though it upset the black student and her father. He said courts had determined school officials can't prevent a student from wearing a sweatshirt unless it's disruptive.

However, when three students arrived at school wearing such clothing on Friday and two were sent home after refusing to remove it, the items were becoming a distraction, Glasspool said in a statement posted on the district's website.

"As an educational institution we view this as a learning opportunity for our children and encourage all families to discuss how these symbols can cause fear or anxiety in others," he wrote. "The practice of ethnic, religious, racial or gender-charged symbols that profess hatred, bigotry, or oppression has no place in any learning institution and will not be tolerated in Plum schools."

Granted it stands a good chance to get tossed due to first amendment issues but until then almost no one would be offending anyone over this or anything else.

Supreme Court has upheld cases where it was proven the items or speech were offensive or impaired the educational mission.

Not a fan of the confederate flag, but the criteria you laid out for your objection may not be the best argument for keeping it out of schools.

Represented a "treasonous group that tried to overthrow the government", that would apply to the countries founders as well, but I don't believe that's most people's true objection to the flag. I think most people have an issue with it because of the symbol of racial hatred that it is, and I think that (not the treason) the best reason to keep any such symbolism out of schools. But that's just my opinion.

The Confederate secession was not. For many reasons, the primary one being they were motivated mainly by the desire to own human beings and work them to death.

From England, we won. While slavery and other human rights issues are certainly major concerns, they're not the thing that determines "legitimacy" in a revolution. If they do, one could suggest that the difference between the treatment of native Americans before and after the revolution made that illegitimate as well.

How incredibly strange. One thing's for sure, they can't use the "heritage" meme like the racist bastards do down here.

I thought it was just a southern phenomenon, "the lost cause" crap and "my great, great, great, great grandfather fought for the confederacy", heritage dodge. I guess up north, it's purely racist, with no thin cover story.

There's a sparsely populated county in western IL that until the last 6 or 7 years had not one person of color there. A Mexican immigrant family moved into the county seat and opened a restaurant. Don't know if there have been any incidents for them. I moved out of the county about 5 years ago.

There are confederate flags all over that county. One person drives around with a big one mounted in the back of his pick up. It was the only county in IL that Obama did not carry in his elections.

I live in the St Louis Metro East area now, very diverse population. Still see flag decals on vehicles and the occasional flag. Saw a hunter in a restaurant last Sunday who was wearing a hat with the confederate flag on it.
