Charity warns of FGM 'parties' taking place in England

"What we're finding now is that where once girls were taken abroad to be cut, specialist midwives are now flown over and several girls are cut at the same time, which then leads to a celebration."
The charity said it had a referral from a school in Leeds last week regarding an eight-year-old girl who they thought was playing truant.
"In fact she was disappearing from class because it took her an hour to go to the toilet, such was the pain she was experiencing," Ms Nelson said.
"People will say why don't you call the police if you hear about one of these parties? But when you call the police you find that not every officer has an awareness of what FGM is."

People want to spew sunlight and roses about certain cultures, so this is largely ignored.

This kind of thing being given a pass doesn't help anyone but extreme right wingers everywhere.

3. proof that one does not have to respect all cultural practices.

I once had a student accuse me of cultural insensitivity because I described a time, after being abroad for several weeks, when I wanted to eat something other than the local cuisine. I was describing homesickness rather than cultural arrogance, but this student (who is not from the culture I'd been visiting, nor had ever been to that part of the world) feared I was being insufficiently multicultural. "You have to respect all cultures, and all of their practices."

So I asked her if that meant respecting FGM.

She was quiet after that.

One can respect a culture while acknowledging the barbarity of some of its practices.
