RALEIGH State legislators wrapped up their work Friday on a pair of controversial bills that would deprive the incoming governor* of a substantial part of his power to make appointments, and reshuffle the regulation of lobbyists, ethics complaints and elections. Gov. Pat McCrory signed one of the bills a short time later.
Less than an hour into the Houses morning session, about 100 protesters began chanting and were cleared from the gallery. They continued to shout outside the House chamber, and law enforcement officers had to clear the area and make arrests. The protest was a smaller but highly vocal repeat of Thursdays protests,** and briefly brought the House deliberations to halt. Protests and more arrests moved the Senate later in the day. ... As the day wore on, several emotional House Republicans lashed out at the protesters, while Democrats defended them.
The House approved Senate Bill 4*** on a vote of 67-23 and sent it to the Senate for final approval. The Senate signed off on it in the early afternoon and sent it to the governor, who signed it.
McCrory has not said whether he will sign another controversial bill, House Bill 17,**** which requires confirmation hearings for the new governors Cabinet officials and prevents him from appointing members of the UNC system schools boards of trustees.

People voted for him 4 years ago thinking he was a moderate Republican--which he pretty much was as Mayor

(988 posts)Should democrats also do whatever is necessary to come out on top?
We keep bitching about the scrupulous things that Republicans do when they win and take over the government and get there way while us democrats keep losing for being the nice guy.
In the end, will the nice intelligent sophisticated democrat win or will the ruthless power hungry demagogue win?
I am starting to have serious questions about our ability to effect this country if we cant do it from a position of POWER.
Trump says all there crappy things and wins
McCrory loses the Governorship and then passes a rule limiting the democrat.
Next up, the us house and senate just pass rules that say you cant run for election in house or senate unless you are republican.

But that will never happen. So Pres. O has to pack up and leave, that's the bottom line.

Until democrats grow a pair we will lose, get cheated on, shut out.
A boycott is an effective tool.

Once more, the courts will have to clean up the mess the legislature made, but it won't stop us from moving North Carolina forward.

Indivisible: A Practical Guide for Resisting the Trump Agenda
Hat tip, @fakedansavage: Libs, progressive, Dems, patriots: Read this right away.
Former congressional staffers reveal best practices for making Congress listen
Donald Trump is the biggest popular vote loser in history to ever to call himself President-Elect. In spite of the fact that he has no mandate, he will attempt to use his congressional majority to reshape America in his own racist, authoritarian, and corrupt image. If progressives are going to stop this, we must stand indivisibly opposed to Trump and the members of Congress who would do his bidding. Together, we have the power to resist - and we have the power to win.
We know this because weve seen it before. The authors of this guide are former congressional staffers who witnessed the rise of the Tea Party. We saw these activists take on a popular president with a mandate for change and a supermajority in Congress. We saw them organize locally and convince their own members of Congress to reject President Obamas agenda. Their ideas were wrong, cruel, and tinged with racism - and they won.
We believe that protecting our values and neighbors will require mounting a similar resistance to the Trump agenda -- but a resistance built on the values of inclusion, tolerance, and fairness. Trump is not popular. He does not have a mandate. He does not have large congressional margins. If a small minority in the Tea Party can stop President Barack Obama, then we the majority can stop a petty tyrant named Trump.
Who is this document by and for?
We: Are former progressive congressional staffers who saw the Tea Party beat back President Obamas agenda.
We: See the enthusiasm to fight the Trump agenda and want to share insider info on how best to influence Congress to do that.
You: Want to do your part to beat back the Trump agenda and understand that will require more than calls & petitions.
You: Should use this guide, share it, amend it, make it your own, and get to work.
To this end, the following chapters offer a step-by-step guide for individuals, groups, and organizations looking to replicate the Tea Partys success in getting Congress to listen to a small, vocal, dedicated group of constituents. The guide is intended to be equally useful for stiffening Democratic spines and weakening pro-Trump Republican resolve.

It will really need to be an allhandsondeck effort.

(4,006 posts)They can be challenged on a number of fronts. One of the best methinks is a lawsuit based on the premise that had a Republican won the election, none of these bills would have been enacted. Another prong of a multi-issue lawsuit would be the fact that these bills uniformly limit the governor's power AFTER the electorate voted McCrory out and installed a Democrat in the position. In brief, the the intent of the voters was superseded after they voted.
No NC expert here nor a lawyer but it seems the new governor has many options to attempt to defeat these bills. Sadly, as another pointed out, even if the Republicans lose here they have set a template for other red states to follow if they don't like the results of a fair election. Heck, they could take this idiocy down to any level of state or local government.
