Henry J. Heimlich, inventor of lifesaving technique for choking victims, dies at 96

By Sindya H. Bhanoo December 17 at 1:31 PM

Henry J. Heimlich, the Cincinnati surgeon whose bearhug maneuver has been credited with saving the lives of tens of thousands of choking victims but whose aggressive self-promotion and unorthodox medical ideas cast a shadow over his legacy, died Dec. 17 in Cincinnati. He was 96. ... The death was announced by his son.
....

Dr. Heimlich knew that air remained in the lungs after an exhalation. That air, he believed, could be used to expel an object. He experimented on an anesthetized beagle and eventually realized that with an upward thrust into the soft tissue under the diaphragm, an object could be dislodged from the throat.

The maneuver is elementary, as the doctor wanted it to be. The rescuer stands behind the choking victim, with the rescuer’s arms around the victim’s waist and then delivers a sharp, upward abdominal thrust, just above the belly button.

He wrote about the first-aid technique in the June 1974 issue of Emergency Medicine. He explained how the maneuver worked and urged readers to send him success stories. He sent the article to science and health writers in the mainstream press and said that more than 2,000 stories of being saved by the maneuver came back within a year.

When I saw the obit a few minutes ago, I thought that Heimlich was dead and that the WaPo had made a mistake in running his obit. What I was thinking of was the story that you bring up.

Pounding someone on the back never worked for me, even though the Mayo Clinic says to try that before you try the Heimlich.

How many lives have been saved by this man indirectly? I believe it was estimated that in the US alone thousands each year...imagine in the world and how many over 40 years....

Then you have Comrade Trumpski...how many lives has that man saved or what has he contributed to humanity and making this a better world?

It should be a person like Henry Heimlich that would be the President-elect. Someone to admire, respect...instead we have a man who will likely kill as many people as Heimlih saved.

This has been a cruel year...

So many good and positive icons of our lives have been taken from us, and to have that worthless POS win the election is just abysmally cruel.

...three months ago--she choked on a fried mushroom. Took me eight or nine thrusts to dislodge it.

I've also done the same basic technique on a cow. We had tossed some fallen green apples from the tree over the fence to let our cows eat them. One of them apparently got a bite of one stuck in her throat. She began coughing and wheezing and gasping for air, even turning blue in the face around the lips. I crawled through the fence, and slid under her, and began pushing into her soft belly just past the end of her breastbone. After maybe a dozen of these thrusts, the apple dislodged and came out. Stupid cow started to pee on me before I could get out from under her. Didn't even thank me.
