Chile Pinochet: Anger as jailed abusers ask forgiveness

Source: bbc

Requests for forgiveness have sparked anger in Chile among relatives of people tortured and killed during Augusto Pinochet's 17-year rule.

Ten men, who are all serving long sentences for human rights abuses, asked for forgiveness during a special Christmas Mass held inside their jail.

But campaigners said if they were truly repentant, they would reveal where some of their victims were buried.

I would consider forgiveness on two conditions:

1. Reveal the location of their remains

2. Agree to accept their sentence and stop all appeals

The problem is that they, like far too many imprisoned killers, don't see forgiveness as a form of closure and healing but as a vehicle through which they can earn brownie points to help secure their release.
