Israel warned New Zealand that UN resolution was 'declaration of war'

Source: The Age

Wellington: Israeli leader Benjamin Netanyahu personally phoned New Zealand's Minister of Foreign Affairs Murray McCully to warn him a UN resolution co-sponsored by the country was a "declaration of war," according to a report.

The UN Security Council resolution called for Israel to stop building settlements on occupied Palestinian land. It went as far as declaring the settlements "illegal".

It was picked up and sponsored by New Zealand and three other countries after US President-elect Donald Trump reportedly pressured Egypt into dropping it.

It was passed on Saturday after the US abstained instead of vetoing, as they historically have done on votes concerning Israel.

If NZ is at war then the ANZUS treaty means Australia and the US are also at war. FFS.

I'm half heartedly thinking of moving there when I retire. Now there's direct flights to Wellington from Canberra, it'd take less than three hours to get back here. And the weathers milder and the country's prettier and houses are cheaper and New Zealanders don't drive like angry arseholes.

Netanyahu is a big bully. He is trying to bully his way on to others just like many republicans try to do. With threats, intimidation.

Just a few days ago he said the Obama administration orchestrated the entire thing, now they are saying NZ put it before the UN after Egypt dropped out.

I can believe Israelis continue to vote this man into office.

Back when NZ became a nuclear free zone, the US had a temper tantrum because they were no longer allowed to park their nuclear powered ships there. So since then ANZUS is a treaty between Australia and New Zealand, and between Australia and the US. Though because of the geographic closeness, an attack on New Zealand by someone like Nutty who was told by an Israeli backpacker that NZ is much greener and hillier and bigger than the West Bank and he decides NZ is the new ancestral homeland and starts bulldozing homes in Wellington, Australia would get involved if NZ invoked ANZUS, and because Australia would feel threatened that the same Israeli backpacker fell in love with Tasmania and mentioned that to Nutty, Australia would invoke ANZUS and the US would do something.

Do something is the catch with ANZUS. unlike NATO it doesn't have a standing force and the treaty is worded so that there's an obligation to consult and take action if a partner's security is threatened. There's a lot of disagreement about what action entails and it's up to the leader at the time to decide. It could be standing up and making a speech at the UN or diplomatic footsies with the offending country, but military action would be very unlikely.

FWIW, Nutty can have all the head explosions he wants at New Zealand. They wouldn't care. He's a little fish pretending to be a shark and this toddler style temper tantrum he's throwing will harm Israel before anyone else. What a certifiable wanker.

I appreciate your post. I for one, needed this information to understand the situation better.

I love NZ. I dream of NZ being my home. It was love at first sight when I learned of them becoming a nuclear free zone. They also, at some point, had thrown out all or most laws and rewrote them to support the environment. The geo-diversity is over the top amazing. I picked a town called Nelson on the South Island on in an ocean cove, to live. It is an artists' and liberals' town. I will keep on dreaming...

As far as Nit goes, this was a long overdue UN action. I am sure there are many in Israel and Palestine happy able the UN resolution.

If you follow the link it goes to a website called "The Age" which referenced an Israeli newspaper which quotes unnamed "Western officials". In other words this a fourth hand fifth hand "report' or in other words BS. It seems everyone denounces fake news when it is on the other side but if it something that you would like to believe then it is embraced.

Link #2 According to Haaretz, in a personal phone call Mr Netanyahu told New Zealand foreign minister Murray McCully

Link #3 Israeli publication Haaretz, citing unnamed western diplomats, described a “harsh” phone call between the pair.

“This is a scandalous decision. I’m asking that you not support it and not promote it,” Netanyahu reportedly told McCully.

Link #4 This link is a paywall so nothing can be seen...

In other words there are no direct quotes from anyone involved. Just "unnamed western officials".

And this::

McCully reportedly refused to back down, according to Haaretz, telling Netanyahu the resolution was consistent with New Zealand policy on the dispute.

McCully's office have confirmed to Fairfax Media that a phone call between the minister and Netanyahu took place just before the vote. They refused to publicly comment on the content of the conversation.

Israel's ambassador to New Zealand Itzhak Gerberg will meet with Netanyahu on Thursday to discuss whether further sanctions against New Zealand are appropriate. Israel's embassy said that "until further notice" no more sanctions would be imposed.

Earlier this week McCully publicly said that Israel shouldn't be surprised by New Zealand's position.

2004 Israel–New Zealand passport scandal

<snip>

"The 2004 Israel–New Zealand passport scandal was an incident of passport fraud in July 2004 that led New Zealand to take diplomatic sanctions against Israel. High-level contacts between the two countries were suspended after two Israeli citizens suspected of being Mossad agents, Uriel Kelman and Eli Cara, were caught trying to fraudulently acquire a New Zealand passport using the identity of a man with cerebral palsy. Prime Minister Helen Clark declared that New Zealand government viewed the acts carried out by Kelman and Cara as "not only utterly unacceptable but also a breach of New Zealand sovereignty and international law."
