Utah Republican argues against equal pay for women: Its bad for families and society
Source: Washington Post
In a letter criticizing a bill that addresses pay gap in the workforce, a Utah Republican said that men have traditionally earned more than women and, citing simple economics, argued that things should stay that way.
James Greens letter to the editor, published in two local publications earlier this week, immediately prompted such outrage that within two days, Green had written an apology and resigned from his post as vice chair of the Wasatch County Republican Party.
Green said in his letter, published Wednesday by the Park Record and the Wasatch Wave, that men make more than women because theyre the primary breadwinners of their families, and paying women equally would somehow ruin the makeup of a traditional family where the Mother remains at home raising children.
If businesses are forced to pay women the same as male earnings, that means they will have to reduce the pay for the men they employ, simple economics, Green wrote. If that happens, then men will have an even more difficult time earning enough to support their families, which will mean more Mothers will be forced to leave the home (where they may prefer to be) to join the workforce to make up the difference.

(12,262 posts)it's that these freaks are vocally coming out of the woodwork. They feel it's okay to be against personal freedoms; it's okay to be a racist; it's okay to be misogynistic.
It's not.
And notes are being taken.

(132,186 posts)that thanks to Raygun, the wages went into such a tailspin that many women who opted to "stay home and raise the children", could no longer do so as it took 2 (purposely-reduced due to greed) incomes to maintain that family.
As it is, for many POC women, our reality has always been that of working outside the home (in many cases by force) ever since we were dragged kicking and screaming here in chains.
Enough is enough.

What about men who do not have a family to support?
They do not need/deserve the extra pay and should get a woman's wage?

What about single women with a family?
Shouldn't they be paid the higher wage?

(9,123 posts)And it's simple economic reality that those jobs that allowed for a single income family to live comfortably have been wiped out, for the vast majority of the working class population. So shithead Green's solution keeps the woman working to help her family, because they need the income. It just makes sure she can't help them as much financially, but she still has to spend as much time at work and 'away from their home and families, where they may prefer to be'.
He's just blatantly working for the interests of the penny pinching and sexist boss, and dressing it up in 'concern' for the 'traditional family' b.s.

(385 posts)I worked for a company manufacturing circuit boards in about 1972. Only women were assigned to soldering components and only men made the boards (it was a long time ago...they were big). There was a significant difference in what men and women were paid, so I asked why. Bad habit of mine. The boss man (what else) actually told me that men were heads of household and women weren't.
It's the same strategy used by the right wing when fundamentalist religion deliberately began to take over school boards and local offices, patiently working their way up to the White House. This type of deplorable behavior is occurring all over the country.

(17 posts)They are afraid that they might not automatically get paid more, get hired first, get the promotion first. Because if they have to compete with women and minorities it means they actually have to work, to do a good job, to excel at their profession. They are the ones who want the fucking handouts.

(288 posts)First it's flat out discriminatory. Second, lower wages (and lower spending power) affects everyone. It part of the "wealth gap" everyone talks about. One way to bridge this is to tax wealthy people more and working people less. Perhaps the average CEO who makes 350 times or more of the average worker has more to do with it than fair wages for equal work.
