Breitbart News editor Milo Yiannopoulos resigns in the wake of outrage over his past comments about
Source: Washington Post
The self-described provocateur was one of the most popular writers on the far-right website that was for years run by current White House chief strategist Stephen K. Bannon. Organizers of this weeks Conservative Political Action Conference rescinded their booking of Yiannopoulos on Monday, following an outcry after his critics resurfaced videos of him criticizing age-of-consent laws and joking about a teenage sexual encounter he had with a Catholic priest.

(10,421 posts)I didn't need to hear the pedophile tolerance video to know this guy is messed up in the head. He wrongly alleged to Bill Maher that transgender people are vastly disproportionately involved in sex crime - you know, the old gay bashing line.
I hope he enjoys the unemployment line for a long time. He's done a real disservice to innocent people who have enough to deal with on their plate.

(985 posts)Transgenders are involved in a higher percentage of sex crimes - as victims.
Jarqui
(10,421 posts)he was completely wrong.
But it wouldn't surprise me if you are correct in terms of transgenders being victims and what Milo presented is probably going to get more of them hurt. That's the despicable, irresponsible thing about his position. If the guy isn't careful, he might find himself as a victim (that's not a threat by me - just a potential risk he faces saying what he did).
MrPurple
(985 posts)I haven't looked it up to verify, but I heard the stat on a higher percentage of sex crime victims being transgender from someone who was on MSNBC last night - I don't remember which show. If he wasn't entirely pulling the comment out of his ass, that's the statistic that Milo was probably referring to and utterly misrepresenting it. They're involved in a disproportionate amount of sex crimes - as victims, not perpetrators.
Maher will undoubtedly spend some time talking about Milo this week. It would be nice if he corrected those statements.

(10,421 posts)- Most studies reveal that approximately 50% of transgender people experience sexual violence at some point in their lifetime.48
- The National Coalition of Anti-Violence Programs reports that lesbian, gay, bisexual, and queer people were three times more likely to report sexual violence and/or harassment compared to heterosexual people who reported to NCAVP in 2010.49
- One in ten transgender individuals have been sexually assaulted in a healthcare setting.50
Anyone got some good stats we can send Bill Maher?

(37,648 posts)I've read it described as a news organization before, too. As far a I know, it's NOT. There are no reporters who go out and pound the street to get a story, interview people, verify facts. That's what news orgs do.
What the site does is take stories FROM news organizations, twist them or cite partial parts, and put them on his site for a partisan story that will appeal to alt-right people. That is not news. I've seen an article actually cite The Daily Caller as a source for part of a story. The Daily Caller? Where did it get that "factoid"? I looked at the link in Daily Caller (citing its source)....and it was another Daily Caller article. It was citing ITSELF as the source of the factoid!

Some people are wondering how Amazon is going to "refund" all the money people paid to pre-order his book. I don't think Amazon bills untill physical merchandise ships.

(17,657 posts)That is the X factor here. We know he has been paid a 250k advance. If the book was delivered by the author per the contract and the publisher elects not to publish it at that time one would think they would retain the rights and he would keep his advance. Where he loses out here is on royalties which he won't get because it's not going to see the light of day, not with Simon and Schuster anyway. At any rate, it's plausible he may not be able to self publish that particular manuscript. I saw the posts you were talking about and almost replied to one then realized they are all imbeciles incapable of processing nuance.

(7,668 posts)And won't publish. Nice. I guess he *could* return the money and buy it back.
I'm so tired of the alt-rights who, upon having misbehavior by "one of their own" confirmed, instead of dealing with it, they scramble for every slim example of someone liberal doing the same thing. They're so "treat the symptom, not the condition."
I chortled online earlier at a comment "Alt-rights continue to defend Milo Y. after Republicans drop him like a hot rock, owning too many rocks already..."

Has Bill Maher said anything? I agree he should have had him on the show before the tape came out. It is such an interesting question "where do we draw the line?"

(985 posts)Sunlight is the best disinfectant. I was recently watching an old Youtube video of Christopher Hitchens interviewing (on CNBC, I think) Tom Metzger, one of the primary Aryan Nation leaders. People like that already have their twisted cult following, but it's better to let the general public see them clearly for what they are. If done correctly, that helps limit their reach. Make them stand fully behind their beliefs without euphemisms or excuses for all to see.
Rather than banning Milo from universities, they should have required him to participate in panel discussions with smart people who had researched his history, and let them lay him bare. On the Maher show, he wilted more easily than I would have expected. It's easier for people like this to build up a rep when they get to be cloistered and unchallenged.

OK, gotta go wash my eyeballs now from looking at that excrement. Hope The Pedophile has a loooooong and painful exile from the public eye. Also hope the excrement sticks to Bannon, who hired and promoted The Pedophile in the first place, and Trump, who tweeted support for him after that thing that happened at the Berkeley campus.
