Michael Flynn, who was forced to resign as national security adviser amid controversy over his contacts with Russia’s ambassador, collected nearly $68,000 in fees and expenses from Russia-related entities in 2015, a higher amount than was previously known, according to newly released documents.

The records show that the bulk of the money, more than $45,000, came from the Russian government-backed television network RT, in connection to a December 2015 trip Flynn took to Moscow. Flynn has acknowledged that RT sponsored his trip, during which he attended a gala celebrating the network’s 10th anniversary and was seated near Russian President Vladimir Putin. His speakers bureau took a cut of the fee.

The newly released documents show that Flynn was also paid $11,250 that year by the U.S. subsidiary of a Russian cybersecurity firm, Kaspersky Lab, and another $11,250 by the Russian charter cargo airline Volga-Dnepr Airlines. The cyberfirm said the payment came for a speech Flynn delivered in Washington. A spokesman for Flynn said the Volga-Dnepr payment also came for a Washington speech; a spokesman for the company did not respond to a request for comment.

I never used their products, but it always made me wonder with so much cybercrime in Russia why did people trust them in the first place.

Quite a number of years ago, I was having a laptop serviced (fan had gone bad) and since I can't leave my hard drive unattended (client confidential data), I was chatting with the guy who ran the repair shop. He was generous with his right wing political opinions, but also strongly recommended I install Kaspersky anti-virus instead of what I had been using. Always struck me as odd.

"In short, you should never install this program on your machine because of one simple reason: corruption. First, Eugene was a spy. He studied at the KGB backed institution, “Institute of Cryptography, Telecommunications, and Computer Science.” After this, he became an “intelligence officer” (AKA Russian Spy). He is entirely, absolutely opaque about both his time at the “educational” institution, and his military service. No transparency: the Russian way of doing things.

Had Eugene moved to Sweden to follow through with his fascination with computer viruses, and to start his company there, I would not write this article. Had he renounced government intrusion in a company dedicated to a public interest, I would also not write this article. But in fact, Kaspersky is run from Moscow, and Eugene is not behind bars, which is all the proof that anyone needs: Kaspersky–the man and the company–works with Putin and his crime organization."
