Marine Le Pen denies French role in wartime roundup of Paris Jews

Source: The Guardian

The French far-right presidential candidate Marine Le Pen has denied that the French state was responsible for the wartime roundup of Jews at a Paris cycling track who were then sent to Nazi death camps.

The former president Jacques Chirac and the current leader, François Hollande, have both apologised for the role French police played in the corralling of more than 13,000 Jews at the Vel d’Hiv cycling track, which was ordered by Nazi officers in 1942. But Le Pen told the LCI television channel on Sunday: “I don’t think France is responsible for the Vel d’Hiv.”

She added: “I think that, generally speaking, if there are people responsible, it’s those who were in power at the time. It’s not France.”

The leader of the National Front party said France had “taught our children that they have all the reasons to criticise [the country], and to only see, perhaps, the darkest aspects of our history. So I want them to be proud of being French again.”

A man named Marie and a woman named Marine. There's something definitely wrong with that family.

It is a true story of how the French worked with the Nazi's to roundup the Jews, separated the children from their parents and in the end killed them all. The part with the children going alone to the death camps was chilling. The parents screaming and crying ,getting beaten for just wanting to be with their children. I am part French and having a hard time knowing of the collusion of some French with the Nazis.

And, as pointed out by you and "RedWedge" below, their names aren't the problematic issues.

12. Oh, no. No one gets to do that. A childhood friend's mom escaped Nazi France.

They were at school; her and her younger brother. They had already been warned by their parents to flee instead of allowing themselves to be assembled.

My friend's mom had noticed the Nazi soldiers and local French officials arrival on school grounds. Students were told to assemble out back.

My friend's mom ran and got her younger brother and they went the opposite way to the woods. The rushing about by other students and adults allowed their escape.

They hid in the woods and heard the tears. After a short pause, they heard the shots being fired.

They were not Jewish. They were the families of French Resistance fighters. The Nazis found out where they lived and where that particular group found safe haven.

She and her younger brother became all that remained of her family. She watched over her brother and herself until they found help. She married an American soldier a few years later and came back to America.

She told her story one day in class. I saw the tears of memory roll down her face. I saw the pain of knowing a world so ugly still alive in her eyes.

Fuck Le Pen.

Yeah, it wasn't everyone in France, but it was far too many people in France who did aid the Nazis. One would have been too many.

I have never tortured anyone. My government did - which means my country did. Some of my fellow Americans cheered it. A token effort was made to lay it to rest with lies of "bad apples" and token sentencing in the lowest of ranks.

A couple of generals were wounded in their careers with no real justice for their actions.

My government skated. Never held accountable.

I'm not guilty of torture, but I am no less responsible if I deny the crimes of my government.

No one has to be actively guilty of an atrocity to be complicit.

If I ever willingly forget or stop pushing for justice, I am no better than the guilty. Because silence is acceptance and denial is complicity.

It can happen. It can happen again.

Denial and lies make it likely to happen over and over again in one form or another. To one degree or another.

So, Again, Fuck Le Pen.
