(7,403 posts)Partially drained the swamp we have always known terminating NAFTA was a false promise - one that Trump would never keep.
Another leg of that promise though was that it would result in jobs returning from overseas. That is now gone too. The jobs will stay in Mexico. The people that put Trump over the top just got a knife stuck in their backs. How will they react?
SergeStorms
(19,204 posts)just the same as they have with all his other broken promises. Continued idolization of their cult leader, and they'll point to these three words; "at this time"! You see, he's GOING to get us out of NAFTA, just not within the first 100 days as he said he would. It's all Obama's fault he wasn't able to do it within 100 days. Those damned Democrats put all sorts of obstacles in his way to sabotage his MAGA juggernaut.
No biggie, he's just waiting for a time where shunning NAFTA will be at a greater advantage to the U.S. The Supreme Leader knows what he's doing. Trust the Supreme Leader. Love the Supreme Leader. All is well.
This won't phase them at all. They're cult members.

(19,204 posts)What NAFTA IS, what NAFTA DOES..........well, that's a whole new ballgame. Trump knew absolutely NOTHING about these treaties while he was on the campaign trail. He just knew that the right-wing populist POV was AGAINST NAFTA. But now that he's been FORCED to listen to the nuts and bolts, well......... it's a different story. Maybe NAFTA isn't so bad after all.

(65,456 posts)he didn't know much about NATO.
He might not even be sure of the difference between NATO and NAFTA.

(8,445 posts)My husband voted for him because of his promise to "tear up" NAFTA. I broke the news to the husband that 45 lied to him. What a shocker!!! 45 has spent his entire life being a liar and cheater, but his idiot supporters didn't think he'd lie to THEM.

(26,303 posts)bullshit.
The man was born into wealth he did not have to deal with the struggle so many millions of other Americans have to deal with growing up that lack decent financial support nor did he have to struggle with being paid absurdly low wages and he has a history of screwing over people especially those he owes money to so why did so many people buy into his bullshit, its just a mystery to me.
Then again he isnt the first person people stupidly voted into office that turned out to be a wrong choice, another politician was elected in a similar manner in Germany back in 1933 and he to used alot of bullshit.

(5,801 posts)dump used those "skills" to pull off the con--convincing dimwitted 'Muricans he cared about them.
And of course, the corporate media by and large gave him a pass on all of his dysfunctional history and criminal past because he was good for ratings.

(2,180 posts)It would cause a bigger mess.we have got companies that depend on parts from Canada and Mexico that would have to stop production.produce would spike at your grocery. it must be renegotiated.I swear Trump is the biggest idiot I have ever seen.he had to be talked out of it or he would have done it.

(30,749 posts)That is just one more reason so many of Trump's executive orders are meaningless. One cannot overturn laws by executive order. Many of the other things he tries to "order" out of existence are laughable when you look at the details.
Maybe that is not so bad. If he stays busy writing his name over and over, it keeps him from doing more drastic and destructive things.

(24,692 posts)and just get a 2/3 vote in the Senate. Like any law passed by congress and signed by the president, I don't think a future president can repeal it unilaterally (or Obamacare would already be gone ).
