Seven shot, gunman dead at University City apartment complex

Source: San Diego Union-Tribune

Seven adults were shot, one woman fatally, when a gunman who witnesses said never left his poolside chair opened fire on a birthday party at an University City apartment complex Sunday.

Police shot and killed the suspect, later identified as 49-year-old Peter Selis, a resident at the upscale La Jolla Crossroads complex on Judicial Drive near the Westfield UTC Shopping Center.

A 2015 bankruptcy filing stated that Selis, a father and a car mechanic at a Ford dealership in San Diego, faced crushing debt.

Authorities said the shooter, armed with a semi-automatic pistol, was white and all the victims were people of color — four black women, two black men and one Latino man. The woman killed was not identified.

University City is full of mid-tier "professionals" and UCSD affiliated workforce - lawyers, financiers, engineers, doctors, professors. There is pretty much no affordable housing in the area, not even for the starving students.

Guy was a failing white professional. Yes, race was involved; he snapped and took out his frustrations on people he didn't feel deserved to be at his privilege level.

On edit - this complex is right next to the medical center my husband goes for his open air MRIs. And a very nice Sheraton hotel complex that is the go-to for international visitors to UCSD.

Of course, since he was a white professional, it isn't terrorism...

Man was having problems dealing with seeing progress. He was a dealership mechanic (probably making around $80K a year) facing bankruptcy, living in a complex where a studio apartment rents for nearly $2K a month, in a hub community where pretty near every household needs to be making six figures just to keep up appearances.

I don't feel the least bit sorry for him. I'm making nearly as much as he would have to just to get approved for that condo complex, with more dependents, and I'm living in a very nice double-wide at one of the least expensive gated family mobile home complexes a few blocks into "the hood" - 10 miles south of where this privileged SOB lived.

It doesn't have the swank that University City, La Jolla, Mira Mesa, Sorrento Valley, or any of the other middle class professional enclaves in the area, but hell, if I wanted to brown-nose with the boss, the place I live is still nice enough to host a corporate and customer barbeque and pool party, at the 3/4 acre mobile home clubhouse, pool, and picnic area- plus there's all sorts of interesting and quality ethnic take-out and delivery places around to give the party a high-end global experience, rather than a boring vanilla wine and craft-beer event that most of the locals throw for corporate.
All for a very affordable $750 a month lot rental for the 2bdr,2ba 1560sqft of renovated and upgraded 1970's double wide we own outright.
A much better way of living than all those "high end" condos all the people who think they have to a certain way or they're somehow losers in life.
I can't understand being that limited, desperate and that angry.

There's this tendency to think with emotions. It's a bad one.

Did he live there?

Was it just really a convenient location?

Aiming at POC implies avoiding whites. What was the "target pool" like?

Was there a specific target followed by by-standers?

America is getting too great for me and it makes my head spin

Did he think minorities were stealing car mechanic jobs?

Nowhere in any of the news articles on this do they mention white terrorism or call him a terrorist. Why not?

Tan, brown, and darker peoples cannot be mentally ill under the core principles of white supremacy

I think someone would have to be mentally ill to do any sort of terrorism. Yet there is an organized and systemic effort to deny the existence of white terrorism.

It's not hyperbole, it's just accurately reflecting what the media and politicians say, and how they do it.
