House GOPer: Move To Another State If You Have A Pre-Existing Condition
Source: Talking Points Memo
President Donald Trump and GOP leaders are asserting that their bill to repeal the Affordable Care Act will protect people with pre-existing conditionsdespite fact that the current bill allows states to waive the protections, giving insurers a green light to jack up the rates of those with a chronic illness or disability.
Other rank-and-file lawmakers have been more blunt.
People can go to the state that they want to live in, Rep. Robert Pittenger (R-NC) told reporters Tuesday morning when asked if people with pre-existing conditions could be charged much more under the American Health Care Act.
States have all kinds of different policies and there are disparities among states for many things: driving restrictions, alcohol, whatever, he continued. Were putting choices back in the hands of the states. Thats what Jeffersonian democracy provides for.

(11,243 posts)in the last re-drawing. Too liberal, I guess. It swoops down into Myers Park with a little keyhole cutout that is Cherry. The 9th district is a disgrace.
wildeyed
(11,243 posts)It's a viciously gerrymandered district that goes all the way to Fayetteville and only covers a sliver of the whitest, most conservative bit Charlotte. Look at the map.

(3,827 posts)And I know all about the gerrymandering that has taken place the past 7 years. Should I have been more specific? I think I got the backwoods idiots comment right- The people of backwoods Matthews, Rockingham, Laurinburg, Fayett-Nam, and all the other rural redneck hot spots in between!
wildeyed
(11,243 posts)It's not a kind thing to say about a city that is, in general, fighting the good fight. Also not accurate since only a fraction of the city is in district 9.
The people who need to get their heads examined are the ones in the General Assembly who did this to our beautiful state. Phil Berger comes to mind. Also, Senator Thom Tillis, because the district maps were his doing to start with, back before the Kochs bought his Senate seat for him. The people who vote for Pittenger are just partisan and/or not paying attention. Kochs and other dark money have spent 10's of millions of dollars convincing them. Keeping guys as dreadful as Pittenger in power ain't cheap.
Everyone in this state is tired and frustrated with the GOP bullshit. But let's not blame it on any particular area. It's hard enough with people outside the state being judgmental of us all. There are good people fighting the good fight all over this state right now.
bathroommonkey76
(3,827 posts)Is Charlotte's 'fraction' is bigger than Rockingham, Laurinburg, Lumberton, and the other po' dunk towns along that route? Fayetteville and Hope Mills population give him the advantage, I know- It's not like the citizens from Charlotte who live in this district should be left off the hook either. Heck, Pittenger is from Charlotte, so you know there's money flowing into his coffers from Mecklenburg and surrounding areas of Charlotte.
Sure, we can blame all of the NCGA reps who have sent our state back to the 1950s- NC Dems need to worry about running quality candidates against Berger, Moore, Lewis, and the other lawmakers who have turned this wonderful Tar Heel state a laughingstock. Grassroots efforts should start with their seats, ASAP! I'm talking about candidates knocking on doors right now to get ahead of the NCGOP's game. I honestly don't think the Dems of this state know how to approach these gerrymandered seats- For a while I hoped NC Dems would hire Howard Dean to give them advice and direction about our future. We need somebody with that type of mindset to help conquer the working class vote again!
Pope, The Kochs, and the other dark money the GOP pours into the elections isn't going to stop. And it's a damn shame those mofos whittled away over the years with the propaganda and lies that brainwashed the uneducated into voting for them.

(13,616 posts)Than do not ask for any federal money for anything. I am getting to the point where I would rather see some places get conquered by Mexico or China than have people who demand the lion's share of our money, yet want to cut our throats as if they were still waging the Civil War.

(844 posts)Seems like the suggestion of somebody afraid that there might be a blue wave about hit them. It's another way to suppress and or redistribute constituents by telling them they aren't welcome in their own home districts where ever that might be.
If Repugs could actually do this they'd be happy till all the blue states had booming economies and they got put up against failing red states.
But as a liberal in Nebraska I have though of moving to Colorado, though I'll be damned if some representative is gonna tell me to.

I've speculated that GOP assoles in state governments hope that if they make life miserable enough for the poor then the poor will eventually get up and move to a more hospitable state. They refuse to expand Medicaid, try to outlaw abortion, require drug testing for food stamps and whatever, hassle them over voting, etc. They're basically trying to turn their states into tax-free havens for the wealthy.

(5,294 posts)since one of the Republican goals is to "sell across state lines" (without having to answer to the state insurance Commission), it won't do any good.

(458 posts)I recall that during the Terri Schivao debacle, Republicans were the ones saying "Why should a bureaucrat decide what a good life is?"
Anyone else also remember when the ACA was being debated and every chainsmoking old church lady was shouting about how the government and the mean old Democrats would force them on a death panel unless they stopped smoking?
