Long-dormant bacteria and viruses, trapped in ice and permafrost for centuries, are reviving as Earth's climate warms.

The Blob is up there too. Will it stay cold enough to contain it? Can we teach The Blob to eat only republicans?

(3,312 posts)If you aren't doing things everyday to boost yours you may want to rethink your personal health regime...What we eat and drink can and does make a difference. I am not putting any faith in "modern medicine"...for the most part they don't understand shit about viruses and unfriendly bacteria and how they affect us everyday.

But what about actual modern medicine?

Fuck that vaccination and antibiotics bullshit, right?

(11,094 posts)Oh FFS...Please stop spouting pseudoscience in disguise.
Bacteria and virology are VERY well understood and are being further explored heroically around the world every day to protect people like you from yourself.
The benefits of a good exercise program (or maintaining an optimal body weight or more specifically an optimal body mass index) are well known, but they do absolutely nothing to help a person avoid infection from an opportunistic pathogen, and if you are ever infected with a bacteria that we have no known drugs to treat with, well that will be the end of you....and it could happen from something as innocuous as a cut finger if you are terribly unlucky.
"Modern medicine" (and the also I'm sure unpopular "Modern agriculture"
is largely responsible for the rise in life expectancy from the early 20th century mid-50's to 60's to the current mid-70's to 80's. That is not "knowing nothing"...

(10,419 posts)but it had to do with the discovery of a sailor who had died of influenza during the huge WWI outbreak and been buried in permafrost/ice/whatever and his remains were being handled like hazmat.

(2,037 posts)Who knows what other dangers lurk beneath all that ice (massive amounts of methane, 20 feet+ sea level rise...). But we don't dare try to mitigate it because some Big Oil billionaire may have one less billion dollars to brag about at the next orgy.
It's a wonder we've made it this far.

(56,848 posts)but The Last Ship on TBS dealt with something like this - over 90% of the world ended up getting wiped out by some sort of plague released from either the Arctic or Antarctic.

(28,312 posts)unknown virus? If so then I hate to break it to you but such potential for some unknown virus has always been with us and ones that were dormant suddenly thawing after a few thousand years is kind of a big yawn.
Even if we were talking millions of years I would tend to yawn as well because its just not that likely to have a major impact on life, in fact if I was going to worry about something more it would be about an asteroid of roughly the same mass as the one that helped kill the dinosaurs and I am not worried about that happening either.
Edit: Now if you want to really worry about something regarding climate change and the melting of the glaciers then I would be worried about everyone that lives on or near the coasts worldwide plus the shift in weather thats bound to create droughts in areas that we humans depend on for producing most of our food.

These don't care what color you are or where you came from, where you live, or the "right" kind of papers or how many guns you have. And they won't care what your last name is, including trump and putin.

My son and I were watching a movie, the actor had a nasty vaccination scar.
I pointed it out.
