Kasich blasts GOP health care bill as inadequate

Ohio Gov. John Kasich on Sunday knocked the Republican health care bill as inadequate, arguing the just-passed House measure would leave many Medicaid patients and those with pre-existing conditions wanting.
"In the area of Medicaid, they are going to eliminate Medicaid expansion," Kasich said on CNN's State of the Union." "And I cover in Ohio 700,000 people now, a third of whom have mental illness, drug addiction, and a quarter of whom have chronic disease."
According to the Republican governor, the House bill would force those Medicaid recipients to move to the exchanges, where they would be expected to pay very high deductibles. "This was not great," Kasich said, "and it will go to the Senate. And I hope and pray that they are going to write a much bigger bill."
Kasich also slammed the $8 billion in funding that House Republicans proposed to dedicate to the "risk pools" that those with pre-existing conditions can join to lower their health care costs: "$8 billion is not enough to fund its ridiculous. And the fact is, states will not opt for that."

(4,490 posts)But at least he's rational on a number of fronts. He can look at an issue like this and say it's stupid and benifits hardly anyone. He knows destroying healthcare for millions of people benifits hardly anyone financially or politically. Even health insurance companies don't like it.

(27,771 posts)However, I agree with your "at least he's rational on a number of fronts"
and, imo, compared to the child-rapist who stole the election from HRC, Kasich would do a much better job as POTUS.
(I agree with reply # 6 as well)

(2,781 posts)He's been bad enough here in Ohio as governor, but people seem to have very short memories when they suddenly see him trying to set a contrast with Trump.
He is vehemently right-to-work/anti-union, has defunded public transit, has undermined local governments through weakening of home rule and reducing local funding, and has undermined public education by embracing charter schools while failing to hold them accountable. He is also anti-choice, favoring abortion restrictions.
People also seem to forget that Kasich is a Wall Street lackey who worked for Lehman Bros prior to running for Ohio Governor. He contributed to the crash of 2007/8, then turned around and blamed our Democratic Governor at the time, Ted Strickland, for the economic crash and job losses here when he ran against him in 2010 and won.
Lose the dead animal on his head and raise his IQ about 15 points, and you have Kasich instead of DJT as POTUS. Like I said, NOT an improvement.

(9,696 posts)I'm tired of hearing that kaysick is the "rational" repub. He's a right wing conservativ & relgious repub. The fact that he "allowed" Medicaid expansion is his one good point - and didn't he drag his heals on that while people died?
His views on women are extreme, he would not respect the separation of church and state. His cabinet would not look much different than trumpfts.
THe only thing I don't know about him is if he's a climate denier.

(5,801 posts)lionizing this guy. They obviously are desperate to have a "sane" puke they can turn into the hero standardbearer for the GOPee. Maybe he's sane by comparison with the nutty teahadists, but on his own record Kasich is a far-right anti-worker tool.
Just goes to show the depths to which the corporate media serves its ownership by pushing the puke party on America instead of calling it out as anti-everything that made this country function in the last century. And, even Bill Maher had this guy on and promoted him as a "good" puke. To big cheers from the audience. This nation is SO brainwashed.

(37,648 posts)That I can tell, anyway. He's a holy roler, though, I think. A real one. Not a fake one like Trump.

(1,408 posts)if he carried out the same shit that he's done to Ohio on a national scale, it would be terrible.
He's defunded libraries, schools, cities, townships, while giving tax breaks to millionaires and big businesses and corporations.
Then there's the fucking of PP, what he wants to do with prisons, highways, schools.
He's done some good, but it's only if it benefits him and those close to him.
He's still a reTHUGliCON and party comes first over country.
Ms. Toad
(33,992 posts)and I would certainly choose any Democrat over him.
But - he is no Donald Trump, and you are being a big harsh as to his motives.
He bucked his party to expand Medicaid in Ohio - and (to my knowlege) that does not benefit him and those close to him. On that issue, he did not place party first over country, nor was he motivated by personal benefit or benefit to thos close to him.
We don't do ourselves any favors when we pretend they are all alike - because as the minority party, we need the conservative voices of reason to avoid the consequences of the raving ideologues who rammed this monstrosity through the House.
Well stated!

(2,781 posts)I can't tell you how sick I am of seeing so many liberals and progressives ready to fawn all over this guy and vote him into the White House because he sounds sane and reasonable to them compared to the BS parade that 45 and his cabal have been foisting on us all since last November.
No, people shouldn't pretend any member of either party is just like all of the others. But there's also a difference between acknowledging single instances of departure from Republican gospel, and then also glossing over or ignoring someone's established track record simply to try and establish some kind of palatable contrast between those who religiously tow the party line, and those who miss a couple Sundays out of the year in search of allies.
I'm a lifelong Ohioan, and Kasich has done nothing but make our quality of life here worse from the day he was elected on all fronts. He is no ally of progressive causes, and more than anything is about John Kasich above all else. The last thing we need is to see him bring his shitshow to the national level. The only difference between Kasich and Trump is a less flashy set of circus performers. You will still have the same three ring circus of policies favorable towards corporate welfare, as well as the same raping and pillaging of our landscape, freedoms, and quality of life. Ohio is not better off for the two terms that he has served as our Governor. I don't want him anywhere near the White House.

(33,992 posts)I'm countering a specific allegation that is demonstrably not true about putting party before country - at least in the context of this conversation about health care.

(1,408 posts)My wife has benefited from it and we're grateful, but he did it so he could hold it up as one of the very, and I stress, VERY, few good things that he has done. A Dem would have to be really, REALLY bad for me to vote against them. And even then...
The thousands of females that can't get affordable medical care through Planned Parenthood because he defunded it probably aren't very happy.

"This legislation will have devastating consequences for women across Ohio. John Kasich is proudly eliminating care for expectant mothers and newborns; leaving thousands without vital STD and HIV testing, slashing a program to fight domestic violence, and cutting access to essential, basic health care," Richards said in a statement."

There's the 20 week abortion ban. Even in cases of rape or incest.
http://www.chicagotribune.com/news/nationworld/ct-ohio-abortion-heartbeat-bill-20161213-story.html
"Kasich, an abortion-rights opponent, chose instead to sign off on a 20-week ban similar to those now in effect in 15 states and blocked from enforcement in two others. The measures are based on the assertion that fetuses can feel pain then, which opponents characterize as scientifically unsound. Ohio lawmakers rejected a Democratic amendment that would have added exceptions for rape and incest."

Hey, all I know is that we are paying higher taxes and levies locally because he cut monies to so many things in the state while corporations and the rich get richer while the middle-class and poor pay for it.
This is a little outdated but most of it still holds true.

If you live here in Ohio and are happy, more power to you. He has affected us(my family) in more bad ways than good. I believe that he only did the Medicaid to hold up when/if he decides to run for pres and he's trying to seem like the adult in the room of crazies.
I will change my "party comes first" phrase though.
It should have read; He's still a reTHUGliCON and party/personal gain comes first over country.
I could go on but you can look things up if you are interested but MST3K comes on in about an hour or so and I have got some things to do first.
Thank you for your comment. It caused me to review what Kashits has done. Hopefully we can get a Dem in when he leaves.
Take care.
