Confederate monument protesters in New Orleans clash at Lee Circle

Source: NOLA.com

Supporters and opponents of removing New Orleans' Confederate monuments met Sunday afternoon (May 7) at Lee Circle, in a tense and angry confrontation that included some scuffles during a day of demonstrations.

Police quickly broke up a few fights, and the dueling protests appeared mostly peaceful. But heated words, slurs and profanities were exchanged, as demonstrators in opposite sides held Confederate flags and protest signs.

A march led by Take Em Down NOLA, which supports the removal of the Confederate monuments, led hundreds of people from Congo Square to Lee Circle, where they came face-to-face with groups of monument supporters who had been there since the morning.

On the other side, a monument supporter shouted over a megaphone: "We built this country. If you don't like it, there are plenty of other non-white countries you can go to!"

Don't take down the statues. Instead, attach plaques that go into detail about the racist hate horror show that these people created.

Traitor is the word. Whenever I see or hear those dumbfucks say but its my "heritage" to fly the traitorous confederate battle flag, I always think , oh, you're PROUD of being descended from traitors? You're proud of being LOSERS! I think Mr. Lincoln was way too generous with the southern states. Should have put Davis and Lee and all the rest of the "elite" who survived on trial for Treason. Banned the flying of the rag of theirs too. Drove HOME the fact that they did indeed lose and it was NOT a "noble cause" but a bunch of treasonous rabble who spit in the face of the American people.

6-1. My impression is the people who actually live in New Orleans are in favor or neutral about the monuments, and mostly think this issue is for Landrieu to raise his national profile.

That said, most (all?) of the anti-removal people are from out of the city, with huge numbers from out of state.

It is my understanding (i'm not sure if this is legally correct), that since it was approved by the council (at the request of the mayor) and also approved by the mayor, then there is no legal reason that it would become a ballot initiative.

That being said, my experience is that most were uninterested in monument removal, until Dylan Roof became a mass murderer. Others remained disengaged and just moderately irritated until the racists invaded the city and attempted to make this a battle ground that would bring significant positive media spotlight and recognition to this cause of theirs (preserving their "history and heritage&quot . They failed at their goal because
1: the "confederates" were outnumbered 20-1.
2: the "confederates" fought amongst themselves
2b:they fought amongst themselves because they were separated from the supporters of the monument removal (or maybe even those who were indifferent)
2c: confederates can't even agree on what exactly they stand for and after fighting each other resorted to infighting and got arrested
3: making any argument while waving confederate flags and wearing helmets is unlikely to ever win said argument

And fuck those asswipes who claim they built this country. It was the "nonwhite" ancestors of the people these assholes were yelling at who actually did build it, including our White House--while enslaved.

Why the hell should there be monuments to an aggressively militaristic authoritarian racist state that existed here? The same CSA that tried to conquer Mexico and the rest of Latin America to spread a society based on the notion that African Americans are farm animals.

I call the confederate flag the Dixie Swastika for that reason

The monuments belong in a museum. These never should have been put up in the first place. To those who do not agree, what side celebrates losing a war? I will never understand those who think they should be celebrating and honoring treasonous losers. I'm white and can stand how some white folks think they should be promoting hate. This is my country. It is time for hateful whites to leave. Why don't they go to Brazil where many confederates fled in the 1860s?
