Research Team Discovers Diabetes Cure Without Side Effects

Source: The Diabetic News

An exciting discovery has led to a new technique that has cured diabetes for one year without side effects by increasing the types of cells in the pancreas that make insulin for both type 1 and type 2 diabetics.

A potential cure for Type 1 diabetes looms on the horizon in San Antonio, and the novel approach would also allow Type 2 diabetics to stop insulin shots. The discovery, made at The University of Texas Health Science Center, now called UT Health San Antonio, increases the types of pancreatic cells that secrete insulin.

Unlike beta cells, which the body rejects in Type 1 diabetes, the other cell populations of the pancreas co-exist with the body’s immune defenses.

“If a Type 1 diabetic has been living with these cells for 30, 40 or 50 years, and all we’re getting them to do is secrete insulin, we expect there to be no adverse immune response,” Dr. DeFronzo said.

Here's more on this, from April:

Like all good scientists, DeFronzo offers this caution. "I'm the first person to say mice are not men."

Therefore, the next step is to raise $5 million to $10 million to continue studies on larger animals: dogs, pigs or monkeys.

Tests in people could start in about three years. South Texas patients will be some of the first to try the gene transfer therapy.

In other words, a ketogenic diet. People don't want to give that stuff up, but it is poison. Also eating frequently keeps insulin levels up continually. Intermittent fasting helps with that. The idea of six small, carb heavy meals per day is often prescribed for diabetics and weight loss in general when it is really like throwing gasoline on a fire.

you can continue eating what you want but exercise like a maniac. Not many people want to take that route either.

I found that 24 hour periods of fasting while continuing the aerobics was particularly effective in my case. Unpleasant but it paid off.

Maintenance now consists of light resistance and bicycling 4 times a week.

For several years. I'm trying to stave off diabetes through diet. I've done a ton of research and decided on keto diet. Not that hard for me to stick to because you have absolutely zero hunger once you're in a state of ketosis. I'm going to be retested in a few months and hopefully my BS will have come down. Bonus is that I've also lost about 15 pounds in about 5 weeks. I know that this will have to be a permanent change and I'm good with that, in fact I kind of like it.

This won't help Type II diabetics, even if it does prove to work in humans. It would be beyond wonderful for Type I victims, though.

Late-onset diabetes (she was in her 50's) due to gaining weight and lack of exercise.

She laid off the beer and brats, ate more lean protein and vegetables, and started exercising again. She was able to stop taking her insulin within a year of having it prescribed to her.

Now I'm trying to convince my wife to do the same before her obesity pushes her over the edge. So far, not so good: she still drinks a 2-liter of Coke a day and has dust accumulating on the gym membership

in fact on the ketogenic diet 70% of calories come from fat, 20% protein and the remainder from carbs. It's the carbs, not the fat that is killing people. Fat is good even saturated fats, however, should avoid transfats and Omega 6 fats found in seed oils (corn, canola, etc.). It's going to take a very long time for it to begin to filter through, people have been so brainwashed against fat. Nearly as bad is frequent snacking aka "mini-meals", plays havoc with your insulin.
