White House deputy press secretary Sarah Sanders on Wednesday said that President Donald Trump has considered pushing out former FBI Director James Comey, who was abruptly fired Tuesday night, since the day Trump won the 2016 election.
Hed lost confidence in Director Comey, and frankly, hed been considering letting Director Comey go since the day he was elected, Sanders said at the daily White House briefing. The President had lost confidence in Comey from the day he was elected.
NBC News reporter Hallie Jackson pointed out that White House press secretary Sean Spicer on Tuesday signaled Trumps support for Comey, hours before the former directors surprise termination. On May 3rd, Sean came out and said the President has full confidence in his FBI director, she said. Why did he say that?
Sanders said Trump spoke to members of the FBI and questioned Director Comeys reason for needing to stay at the bureau, which is investigating possible ties between members of Trumps campaign and Russian officials.

WH: Its Startling That Democrats Arent Celebrating Comey Firing
By ESME CRIBB Published MAY 10, 2017 2:18 PM
White House deputy press secretary Sarah Sanders on Wednesday expressed surprise that Democrats are not celebrating President Donald Trumps firing of former FBI Director James Comey, who led the bureaus investigation into election meddling.
Frankly, I think its startling that Democrats arent celebrating this since theyve been calling for it for so long, Sanders said at the daily White House press briefing.
She said Comey made a lot of missteps and mistakes over the last year.
Certainly I think that, as youve seen from many of the comments from Democrat members, including Sen. Schumer, they didnt think he should be there, Sanders said. They thought he should be gone.

(128,930 posts)It was stop-gap measure to put a time limit on the leadership of a critical investigative body post-Hoover, but still allow for some sort of extended continuity, despite the eventual decision to have the position serve at the pleasure of the President (but requiring extraordinary reasons for termination).

(47,209 posts)The defense they'll try to use as people on his campaign get (I hope) indicted? And he'll claim his swift firing of Flynn is him draining the swamp. That he knew nothing about it- but the rules and norms for candidates are different. And that nothing he did as a candidate matters. That's what I am hearing from Kelly and Sarah.

(37,648 posts)Trump tries to ruin careers and people's lives, if they do anything that is against him. He's brutal. So I expected him to fire Comey on Day One.
But when he didn't, I thought he'd rec'd counsel not to do that. So I'm caught off guard that he would do that NOW, when it looks so bad for Trump doing that and he cannot use an election campaign reason.

(49,001 posts)They've been working on firing him for a long time, but yesterday there were subpoenas for financial records.
Even more likely the trigger was a few days ago when Comey's investigation requested an increase in budget, because it was widening and getting more serious and getting closer to tRump.
Notice how the AG (recused but not acting recused) and Dep AG dated their letters yesterday.

(3,282 posts)I said this in another thread:
Right after he (Comey) dropped the "revelations" about the new set of emails under investigation (that of course turned out to be a tempest in a teapot), I said that no matter who wins the election, Comey's finished. No one can properly trust him any longer. Hillary sure can't trust him to be non-partisan, and Trump can't trust him to be loyal, because what he did for Trump was, itself, an act of disloyalty.
If Trump had ditched Comey right after the election, he might have gotten away with the "It was because of the Hillary thing" that they're trying to peddle, but not now. It may even have won Trump some bipartisanism points with the media. But the sudden firing now? No way. His reasons are transparent and obvious. If they really cared about how he treated Hillary, it would have happened a month ago.
Firing him now was idiotic. Trump can't plan 2 minutes ahead, never mind two months. He reacts to what's happening about 5 minutes ago. Part of the GOP's biggest problem is a disturbing lack of foresight and long-term planning. Of course, then you realize that there are actually people IN THE GOVERNMENT who believe that the Rapture will happen any day and it'll all be irrelevant because they'll be raised up to heaven. Also, let the grandkids take care of all of these problems.
