Lauded rocker Chris Cornell killed himself by hanging

DETROIT (AP) — Chris Cornell, one of the most lauded and respected contemporary lead singers in rock music with his bands Soundgarden and Audioslave, killed himself Wednesday by hanging in a Detroit hotel room, according to the city’s medical examiner. He was 52.

The Wayne County Medical Examiner’s Office said Thursday it completed the preliminary autopsy on Cornell, but that “a full autopsy report has not yet been completed.” A police spokesman told two Detroit newspapers that the singer was found with a band around his neck.

“There is no additional information at this time,” the Wayne County office added.

Cornell was a leader of the grunge movement with Seattle-based Soundgarden — with whom he gained critical and commercial acclaim — but also found success outside the band with other projects, including Audioslave, Temple of the Dog as well as solo albums. He was widely respected in the music industry: He reached success in every band lineup he was part of it, his voice was memorable and powerful, and he was a skilled songwriter, even collaborating on a number of film soundtracks, including the James Bond theme song for 2006?s “Casino Royale” and “The Keeper” from the film “Machine Gun Preacher,” which earned Cornell a Golden Globe nomination.

Chris is one of my musical heroes ... and Say Hello to Heaven (written in tribute to OD victim & friend Andrew Wood, of Mother Love Bone fame ... the band which became Pearl Jam when Eddie Vedder took over vocals in the aftermath) ... is one of my all-time favorite songs ... one of the greatest and most moving vocal performances ever put on wax ... I saw Soundgarden a few times in the early 90's ...

He says a lot of the guys from the 90's are really struggling financially having depleted their wealth though divorces and failing to recognize their reduced earning potential until it was far too late. Throw in drugs, alcohol and unsavory company and a lot of them find themselves in pretty hopeless situations.

He personally believes if he had made it just two years earlier he would have come off the rails too because he and his now wife were running pretty wild, but when his success came he had an infant daughter and the only thing he was really interested in those years was getting back to L.A. to be at home with her, nothing else even registered and without that he thinks they might have succumbed to some of the temptations available to them.

Reading about his death produced an audible gasp from me. Suicide would just make me sadder than sad. The article says the police are the ones calling it a possible suicide. He was found on the bathroom floor.

during last night's show:


Even without the benefit of hindsight from the morning's awful news, it was clear that something wasn’t right with the 52-year-old Cornell during the Fox performance. He often staggered back-and-forth across the stage, and seemed weak in his movements. Just one or two songs in, it was as if the energy had exited his body, and what was left was a shell of a man scrambling to do his job.

It's not that the nearly two-hour show itself was bad, but it seemed like Cornell wasn’t mentally present.

He missed words, sometimes in entire blocks, letting the crowd sing the parts of the songs he didn’t. Nobody complained; in fact, the audience of about 5,000 seemed to love it.

Cornell was visibly agitated at times. He walked off the stage for several minutes before playing “Been Away Too Long,” causing the band to start over and leaving them playing instrumentals to fill the gap. When he came back onstage, he made a “move it along” motion with his hand.

Bandmate and bassist Ben Shepherd laughed it off, but then Cornell took to the mic to complain that he didn’t have a backup guitar. “Been Away Too Long,” which was Soundgarden’s 2012 comeback single from the album "King Animal" after a more than decade-long breakup, was played as a strange, bass-heavy rendition that moved in the wrong direction.

34. TBH, sadly, that sounds very much like a man in the throes of opioid withdrawal ...

... a condition I'm sadly familiar with for reasons I don't care to divulge. Even if he was an addict in the past, once one's body becomes acclimated to opioids, for the rest of one's life, all it takes is one 'use' ... to induce withdrawal effects afterward.

IOW, he might've been clean for long awhile, but maybe used once earlier that day ... and found himself in WD's during the show. Then he gets back to his hotel, depressed as hell from the after-effects of using, including not only the dope-sickness but also the emotional turmoil of having to reset his 'sobriety date' ... of having to tell his family he messed up and used ... disappointment with himself for 'failing' ... these are very real things, trust me ...

I don't want it to be true but I suspect they'll find traces of opioids in his system in the autopsy.

In the article the reporter talks about him taking a couple of Ativans after he got back to his hotel room- Cornell's bodyguard supposedly was holding his prescription for him.

The article also says Ativan is used for seizures and anxiety. I've never been big on pills, so I can't offer any more input on the subject.

He had the most amazing voice.

I was overseas when the Seattle music phenomenon hit. Every time Nirvana or Pearl Jam or Soundgarden posted a hit, I felt a warm glow of pride in my home state and the greatest city in the USA. I remember Cornell wailing on 'Spoonman'. I felt over the moon when I saw the video for Hunger Strike; Cornell and Eddie Vedder singing that astonishing song at the Discovery Park light.

Black Hole Sun knocked me out of my chair the first time I saw the video. I thought I'd slipped sideways into a David Lynch film.

And then Cornell sang the greatest credits song in Bond film history: You Know My Name ...

I was blessed to see Chris with Audioslave in 2005 at the Detroit show as well as an acoustic show of his in Detroit around 2011. His music was a HUGE part of my life growing up. He is a legend and will be truly missed.

...and my heart broke a little. Soundgarden is one of my favorite bands of all time and whether it was with them, Audioslave, Temple Of The Dog, or his solo work, Chris was one of the best rock vocalists ever, bar none.
