(10,500 posts)First, the GOP was determined to steel that election. And the MSM was complicit once they got their narrative going. Ailes and Fox made it easier. But were they really going to be stopped? They had the Florida legislature and the Supreme Court working for them.
Now let's suppose that we did elect Al Gore in 2000. Wasn't there always going to be the next Republican act of evil? The next diabolical scheme? Look at what they did after Benghazi. So maybe it would have come later. But isn't it equally accurate to say that it could have come earlier? Maybe they could have done something to illegitimately win in 1996.
Put it like this: If Wes Clark had been the Democratic nominee in 2004 rather than John Kerry, is there any doubt that we would still have had some incarnation of the Swift Boat Veterans?

That said, I do feel sorry for his family. I'm sure they are in pain. So - my sympathies to go to them. But other than that - I find it hard to mourn someone who sexually harassed numerous women and single-handedly helped dumb down America.

(11,254 posts)I don't wish harm on anyone, and I try not to speak ill of the dead. If anything, I was hoping he'd stick around long enough to see what he built continue to crumble.
FoxNews was never built to last. It's success was based on appealing to older, angry, conservative white men. It did a great job of doing that, but nothing was going to stop the fact that its target audience is shrinking rapidly.
Also, when you look at the amount of mysogony thrown around on the air, it was inevitable that it would spill into the personal realm. Those sexual harassment lawsuits were entirely predictable, and I wouldn't be shocked if they aren't the tip of the iceberg.
When you add all that to the fact that the network is now joined at the hip with one of the most despicable and comical figures in American history, I get the sense that the pace of its decline will only get faster.
It's too bad Ailes won't be around to see it.

And since he (Ailes) missed the opportunity in 1972 to be called into the Watergate crime spree testimony, he can be rest assured that he too will have a excuse to be able to missed this crime spree to explain himself and his actions
