Police officer Betty Shelby found not guilty in fatal shooting of unarmed black man
Source: CBS News
TULSA, Okla. -- A white Oklahoma police officer who fatally shot an unarmed black man last year has been found not guilty of first-degree manslaughter after nine hours of jury deliberations.
Tulsa officer Betty Jo Shelby killed 40-year-old Terence Crutcher Sept. 16 on a city street where his SUV had stalled. The video taken of Crutcher's shooting by a dashboard camera and helicopter shows Crutcher walking away from Shelby toward his SUV with hands above his head.
The family of Terence Crutcher burst into tears and reacted with outrage after jurors found Tulsa officer Betty Jo Shelby not guilty in the Sept. 16 shooting.
"Let it be known that I believe in my heart that Betty Shelby got away with murder," Crutcher's father, Rev. Joey Crutcher said after the verdict was announced.

Judge, jury, execution - followed by "acquittal" in a court room.
Seems a little backwards, but not so's anyone would notice.

(45,403 posts)4 officers felt one unarmed black man was so dangerous that they needed to make America great again just in case. For safety reasons.
Meanwhile whites open carry, keep guns in their vehicles, point them at officers, refuse to comply with police orders, and somehow live to do it again and again and again, often while high on meth.
When this happened last September, female freepers were claiming this is a win for feminism and that the patriarchy is oppressing poor officer Betty Shelby because she's a strong woman and her blue life matters.
I'm sure the 4 officers felt scared like triggered snowflakes because he was high on PCP (like Rodney King), but he's dead because he's black.

(8,852 posts)...to be police. I saw a report about his case on (I think) 60 Minutes. One part really sticks in my mind. She described how he walked to his vehicle with his hands in the air and she said he then turned his head to look at her--hands still in the air. She claimed that "This is called targeting." All I could think was that most people would call it simply LOOKING AT YOU!!! WTF!!!

I agree that an innocent man was murdered for no reason. And this woman got away with murder. If you, me, anyone shot someone in these circumstances, we'd never see the outside of a prison again.

(255 posts)Detroit is not in a southern state. New York City is not in a southern state. Cleveland is not in a southern state.
To regionalize the cold blooded murder of black males minimizes what is happening on our streets every bit as much as the "few bad cops" excuse.
From the moment laws are passed to legitimize law enforcement intervention for conduct so broad that intervention becomes completely a matter of the discretion of the officer involved . . . through the STILL popularly accepted notion that people of color, and particularly black males, are inherently more dangerous . . . through law enforcement training that teaches excuses for racial profiling, as opposed to its wrongfulness . . . through the ineffective (usually intentionally) prosecution of blue on black murder . . . through the politicians of all stripes who find some reason to defend law enforcement and to condemn those who are JUSTIFIABLY ENRAGED, to the other gross injustices of our "criminal justice system" . . . through other actions too numerous to name . . . the majority is waging a war on people of color no different than the war it's been waging for almost five centuries.
How much longer do we have to wait before the majority admits it?
How much longer do we have to wait for justice?
How much longer until we defend ourselves?

(9,350 posts)This verdict makes me think the cop in Dallas, who shot the 15 year old boy, will also be found not guilty. Just like in this case the boy and his brothers were moving away from the cop. The problem is, just like in this case, the boys were not listening to the cop. Maybe the fact that the Dallas cop lied and it seems to have been proven that the young men were not shooting at him will cause him to be convicted. However, I am not very confident that there will be a conviction.
