Ivanka Trump 'receives permission to fly on Sabbath' for father's trip abroad

Source: Independent

Jewish law generally does not permit travelling on the Sabbath except in life-threatening situations

Alexandra Wilts Washington DC 5 hours ago

Ivanka Trump and her husband Jared Kushner reportedly got the green light from a rabbi to fly on Air Force One with Donald Trump, as the president kicked off his first trip abroad as president.

Both practicing Orthodox Jews, Mr Trump's daughter and son-in-law typically observe the weekly Shabbat holiday by removing themselves from work activities from sundown on Friday to sundown on Saturday.

Jewish law does not permit travelling on the Sabbath except in life-threatening situations, or if there is a safety concern. It was not clear on what grounds the rabbi made the exception for Ms Trump and Mr Kushner to accompany the president on his trip, Politico reported.

On Inauguration Day, they also received a rabbinical approval to travel by car.

She's showing that she's the good little Jewish girl who asked the rabbi's permission first.

I'm not sure if Jared (who was raised Jewish) ever did any such thing, and that's what is odd about this.

Just sayin'

Does anyone in the Trump clan have a sincere spiritual bone in their bodies?

...but our local bishop in Pittsburgh gave dispensation to eat meat on that particular Friday.
Only because it happened during Lent, when we're still doing the abstinence thing.

For me it didn't matter because I've always hated corned beef. My mom didn't know how to cook it right and I always hated it since childhood.

American bishops, as a rule, are usually good about dispensations for the Irish when it falls on a Friday. In Ireland, barnacle goose was often claimed to be 'seafood' and not meat back in the days when the Lenten abstinence went the whole 40 days. Mostly claimed by the well-to-do, mind you...

And corned beef is an Irish-American thing that has since been imported to Ireland. Originally it was Irish bacon and cabbage (think Canadian style back bacon). That style of bacon was harder to come by here, but the nice Jewish neighbors clued us into corned beef and the rest is history (well, folklore, but you get the idea). I can't stand cabbage--taste or smell--but a nice Rueben sandwich with thin sliced corned beef...

Traveling on the Sabbath was a matter of convenience and not necessity, much less emergency. I hope the in-flight movie options included Chariots of Fire.

Special dispensation? Sounds quite pharisaical to me. Do these people really think the creator of a universe so vast we cannot even comprehend our tiny corner of it gives a rat's rear end if some puny, ephemeral Homo sapien travels by air on a certain day? What crap! Yet lying their asses off 6 days a week is perfectly fine.

she was converted by an RCA biet din. The rabbi she studied under has some issues, but he wasn't formally part of her conversion. The only way it wouldn't be recognized is if there is reason to doubt she was sincere at the time of the conversion.

There have long been situations where heads of state were allowed to travel on the Sabbath.
