US President Donald Trump complained bitterly about the German trade surplus on his meeting with the EU top in Brussels. "The Germans are evil, very evil," said Trump. This was learned by the SPIEGEL from participants in the meeting.
Trump said, "Look at the millions of cars they sell in the US, and we'll stop that."
At the meeting, EU Commissioner Jean-Claude Juncker took the side of the Germans and disagreed with Trumps Schelte. Free trade is a good thing for all, said the Commissioner. Juncker had tried a friendly tone, but was hard on the matter, says the participants.
At about an hour's meeting, Trump first met with President Donald Tusk and Commissioner Jean-Claude Juncker, after about 45 minutes, other members of the European Parliament came, including the President of the European Parliament Antonio Tajani and the EU's chief diplomat Federica Mogherini. (An analysis of the meeting can be found here .)

The Germans are bad, very bad: Trump pledges to stop German car sales to US
SARAH K. BURRIS
25 MAY 2017 AT 16:17 ET
President Donald Trump is ready to fight Germany in an auto battle according to Germanys Der Spiegel.
Trump got a chilly reception at the NATO summit in Belgium after attacking fellow members. But he was caught pledging a battle with German automakers as part of his anger with back dues he feels the country owes to NATO. As CNNs Jake Tapper noted, Trump seems to think its like a country club.
In a discussion about the countrys trade surplus, Trump said The Germans are evil, very evil.
Look at the millions of cars they sell in the US, and well stop that, sources told Der Spiegel
According to the report, EU Commissioner Jean-Claude Juncker took up for Germany explaining that free trade is good for all.

(48,936 posts)tRump said "bad, bad". That gets translated into German, possibly with a slightly heavier nuance. Then it gets translated back into English with again a slightly heavier nuance as "evil, evil". It's enough that tRump is stupidly clueless about diplomacy without attributing even less diplomatic language when translation is to blame.
It's like the old game "telephone whispers".
In the early days of computer translation, the researchers had a program translate a phrase into Russian and then translated back. It was an old biblical phrase: "The spirit is willing but the flesh is weak." It came back as "The wine is strong but the meat was spoiled."

The Velveteen Ocelot
(115,573 posts)"schlecht" or "böse." Apparently Der Speigel used the word "böse," which usually re-translates to English as "evil," a rather stronger word than "bad." But even if Dolt 45 called the Germans merely "bad" and not "evil," it was still an incredibly stupid, hamfisted thing to say, and it will have some Foreign Services people scrambling to try to repair the damage. Working for Trump is like being the guy who walks with a shovel behind the elephant in the circus parade.

(23,059 posts)It really sounds like it's worse than that. A lot of Alzheimers patients get very weirdly and unnecessarily aggressive and mean and oh boy does that sound like him. This is totally insane.
He's putting the whole world at risk and Repugs don't care because they want to redo America so that all the $ (not just most) goes to the oligarchs and they hope the rest of us die young due to slave wages and no affordable healthcare. They are willing for Russia to put Europe in flames and sit on the sidelines so that Putin continues to steal elections for them, such disgusting fools.

(7,220 posts)I would be inclined to agree with the Alzheimer's/Dementia theory, except the bad behavior only comes out when he doesn't get his way.
The Saudi's met him on the tarmac and immediately presented him with an award just for showing up (like the entitled brat he is). Never mind that they were buttering him up for their own gain, they know he falls for it every time. So do the Russians.
The Europeans have different expectations. They don't give him accolades. They know what's at stake, and they know he isn't up to the task. They expect him to act with respect and collaboration. So when he doesn't get the slobbering praise he thinks he deserves, he acts like a high school bully, shoving heads of state and calling people names. And lecturing NATO members for (oh irony of ironies), not paying their bills.

Anger doesn't begin to cover how I feel. I am mad, but most of all, I am frightened for what he is doing to this country. I don't know what his intent is, nor do I care. I just see what the results are. This has gone on far too long. Are the people we sent to Washington to do the people's business paying attention to what he is doing?? Do we need to march...in large numbers if necessary...on Washington to insist that they hear our cries?

He calls up the president of the Philippines who has unleashed a wave of extrajudicial murders on the basis of possible involvement with drugs and kisses his ass, invites him to the WH. he says he had to let spies into the oval office because putin requested it and "what? i'm going to say no to putin?"
why am i surprised at this point. i guess in a way i'm really not. i'm shocked, but not surprised. that i still can be shocked, that's a surprise. but i really don't want to lose the basic human decency that gives rise to my shock. and so we go.
