Two men were killed in a stabbing on a MAX train Friday when they tried to intervene as another man yelled racial slurs at two young women who appeared to be Muslim, including one wearing a hijab, police said.

A third passenger who tried to help was also stabbed, but is expected to survive, said Portland police spokesman Sgt. Pete Simpson.

Officers arrested the suspect as he ran from the Hollywood transit station into the neighborhood near Providence Portland Medical Center in Northeast Portland, Simpson said. Police are still working to identify him and the three men stabbed.

The suspect was ranting about many things, using "hate speech or biased language," and at one point focused on the young women, Simpson said.

5. Very sad situation in my home town

Two good Samaritans lost their lives on a MAX train tonight coming to the aid of two Muslim women. The killer was apparently screaming slurs toward them, but also seems to have been ranting about many dis-jointed things. When he saw a woman in a hijab, his rage became focused.

We will know more in the coming days about what happened. The grotesque details of the murders are now becoming known. I suspect that failed mental health policies will once again be central to this tragedy. The toxic mix of un-treated dilusional thinking and a devolved bigotted public discourse combined to unleash this man while riding a train.

Citizens stepped forward to intervene and protect women they did not know. Their brave actions cost them their lives.

It was this act that sparked the first moment of chaos at the "free speech" rally on April 29 in Montavilla Park, which then proceeded down 82nd Avenue, a miserable replacement for a neighborhood parade canceled due to the threat of political violence. The man in the flag cape was quickly swarmed by scrawny young antifa kids, then by officers from the Portland Police Bureau.

After the scrum dispersed, I stood by watching while police searched his backpack. They seemed to know that, prior to the march, he had posted a Facebook message threatening to "shoot to kill POLICE if they ATTEMPT DISARM" anyone openly carrying a firearm to the rally.

I've got to say, whether he's legally insane or just insanely vile, I hope he never, ever sets foot on the street again. Why he was on the streets given everything is a really good question. People who have been in prison shouldn't be persecuted after their release, but when they keep getting guns they are not legally allowed to have, they shouldn't be allowed to walk.

Police say the suspect purchased a knife inside the store and then turned it into a weapon. Smith's employee Dorothy Espinoza says, "He pulled it out and stood outside the Smiths in the foyer. And just started stabbing people and yelling you killed my people. You killed my people."

PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) — The Latest on a stabbing attack on a Portland, Oregon, light rail train that left two men dead. Authorities say the suspect directed an anti-Muslim rant at two women. (all times local):

The man charged with stabbing three men on a Portland light-rail train told jailers that he has no income, no mental health issues and does not remember the last time he had a permanent address.


Court documents based on Jeremy Christian's interview at the Multnomah County Jail show he was concerned about free speech. The interviewer wrote that Christian became loud and animated when talking about what he believed to be the suppression of free speech.

Christian says he went to school through 9th grade, but passed the high school equivalency exam commonly known as the G.E.D. and took some community college classes.
