Portland Republican says party should use militia groups after racial attack

Source: The Guardian

. . .

Multnomah County GOP chair James Buchal, however, told the Guardian that recent street protests had prompted Portland Republicans to consider alternatives to “abandoning the public square”. “I am sort of evolving to the point where I think that it is appropriate for Republicans to continue to go out there,” he said. “And if they need to have a security force protecting them, that’s an appropriate thing too.”

Asked if this meant Republicans making their own security arrangements rather than relying on city or state police, Buchal said: “Yeah. And there are these people arising, like the Oath Keepers and the Three Percenters.”

Asked if he was considering such groups as security providers, Buchal said: “Yeah. We’re thinking about that. Because there are now belligerent, unstable people who are convinced that Republicans are like Nazis.”
. . .

The Oath Keepers are described by the Southern Poverty Law Center as “one of the largest radical antigovernment groups in the US”, recruiting current and former military and law enforcement personnel. They have recently appeared at rallies from Berkeley to Boston, standing with activists from the far right, activists holding what were once fringe positions who have recently risen to national prominence.

The Three Percenters are described by Political Research Associates as “a paramilitary group that pledges armed resistance against attempts to restrict private gun ownership”. They were a highly visible presence in Burns, Oregon, before and during the occupation of the Malheur wildlife refuge by rightwing militia early in 2016.

They are already doing what they can to intimidate everyone else.

They are either pawns of, or enlisting, outside interference in local, state, and national elections.

Several of these thugs have already made their way into the US Congress. Repuglicans are well known for being physically belligerent and abusive to people that try to use rational language.

Refers to the 3% of American colonists who actually took up arms against the British in 1776 (which is actually false, since modern scholarship says it's closer to 15%). But in any case, what it means is they are advertising their willingness to take up arms against the U.S. federal government.

Conservative militia requests/encourages killing of police.

Starts about 10:40 on the timeline

One of our Christian, patriot, conservative militia heroes encouraging supporters to come shoot the police when they conquered and captured an unmanned Federal nature preserve in Oregon.

Where were our conservatives to call this out as wrong?

who killed two men who were defending a Muslim woman and her friend? The Portland Republicans aren't victims as Buchal seems to be trying to say they are. The victims were the Muslim woman and her defenders who died at the hands of Jeremy Christian, a bigot well known to authorities.

Of course he knows.

That's the notorious place for Klan rallies throughout the decades. It also has an engraving of Civil war 'heroes' Robert E. Lee, Stonewall Jackson and Jefferson Davis etched on its face. These rallies have gone from white sheets to camo. Go figure.

and SCOTUS, I think we could go pretty far. I think voter suppression could go national and go big. Reporters and the news media will continued to be mocked and bullied, some could be physically assaulted. Oh wait.

Are we Germany, 1933 or 1936? Of course not. But I'll say this: I've seen a president assassinated, one resign and one impeached, towers fall, riots in the streets and wars, wars, wars. But nothing I've seen is more disturbing than what is happening right now in America.
After decades of watching our country's wealth disappear into the hands of the 1%, it's about to get a lot worse, with a vengance, while religion plays an even more onerous role in our government. Who's gonna stop them? The Supreme Court?

I used to work with one of them until he got convicted of molesting his 14-year-old niece. He was a TRUMP supporter from the beginning. Guy has a huge collection of weapons, including two AR-15s and an M1 Carbine, fully automatic (he actually went through the three-year process of getting a license to possess it. I'm scared as hell about what he might do when he gets out.

lives in Portland so I visit frequently and we often discuss the protests. Nobody is attacking Republicans. Occasionally during a large protest an "anarchist" fringe gets out of control and starts breaking things and once in awhile there are clashes with police. When there is confrontation between protesters it's the alt-right types starting it. Must be tough for wingnut Republicans living in a city full of liberal tie-dyed peaceniks who want to talk about their chakras and their preferred pronoun. And as someone mentioned above, it was a white supremacist who went into meltdown, screamed at two Muslim girls and attacked three guys trying to intervene and killed two. For this reason Buchal wants a screwball militia to give him protection. Because he's a tough guy.

The overlap of hate groups and militias will not be questioned or investigated. The Taliban are a militia. ISIS is a militia.

Sounds like a great way to empower and legitimize white supremacist groups. Make it official.

Dear Asshat Buchal,

Take your buddies, go out in the desert, and LARP your fantasy until you get a handle on your own delusions of self-importance. Stay there until your food runs out, your water grows algae, your batteries die, and you come to the 1st grade realization that you and your fellow chairborne rangers are part of a massive social contract and cannot possibly do it all for yourselves. If re-enacting doesn't prove to you that your self-appointed militia full of people who have never missed a meal, never humped a ruck over 30 miles of broken ground, and never washed their own socks are about the last people on earth who should be self-selecting for your personal security and self-aggrandizement, then stay there until you get the picture. Trust me, the rest of us will be perfectly fine without you, and you need us a hell of a lot more than we need you.

Shorter: you're idiots. There's a reason you're not in charge of anything more important than a mutual admiration society. Wait... a mutual admiration society that didn't manage to elect anyone or pass any of your initiatives. For at least a decade. Grow the fuck up.

And who's paying for this bad idea? All us liberal tax payers? LOLOLOL

I supposed the idea is we should be scared.
But I'm thinking that would be the fastest way to make sure the Congress turns so blue that there won't be a cent left for the military, the GOP, their hospitals, their schools, their police and their bullet tax will be $1000 a bullet as well as a bullet use fee of $2000 per bullet. Failure to pay fines or fees will result in forfeiture of property.

Either that or it's all out war. And they'll be bringing guns to a bomb fight.
