DeLemus sentenced in Cliven Bundy case

Jerry DeLemus, a Rochester man who pleaded guilty last year in connection with the Cliven Bundy armed standoff in Nevada in 2014, was sentenced to federal prison Wednesday.
DeLemus, who served as a co-chairman of President Donald Trump's veterans coalition in New Hampshire during the campaign, was sentenced to 87 months, or seven and a quarter years.
It was the first prison sentence in the Bundy case. DeLemus, who was arrested in March of 2016, was called a "mid-level leader and organizer of the conspiracy."
Before the sentencing hearing, DeLemus said he would do it all again, except for bringing firearms across country when he joined up with the Bundy standoff, according to the Las Vegas Review-Journal.

Judge Navarro added 15 months to the sentence recommended by the prosecution. The article doesn't mention it but Delemus was a Birther and co-chair of Veterans for Trump in NH.

(21,634 posts)Federal crimes like these - where machine guns were literally aimed at people - should be prosecuted a little more quickly.
That said, this is big news. Thank you!

Apparently Judge Navarro called Delemus a "bully vigilante" . Good stuff!

(13,485 posts)I wonder if slower is better to slow the momentum of those who support the criminals. Time has a way of cooling down the epiphany of it all. That can save lives. But just as long as justice is served in the end it doesn't matter.

(21,634 posts)We don't want to give them anything they could realistically use to throw a 'miscarriage of justice' canard at the courts (not that it stops them from trying).

(7,300 posts)I hate these MF'ers. If you're going to play soldier, you might want to learn what a field of fire is. In this pic, the idiot has the muzzle of his weapon jammed into a small crack. The "enemy" will have a very easy time avoiding his fire by moving slightly left or right because he's not going to be able to adjust his aim with that muzzle being held in place by the concrete barrier. In addition, his flack jacket is too small and nearly useless.
These jack asses think a weapon and maybe some cammo is all it takes to be a soldier. They're really just bullies, full of false bravado as seen by this POS hiding behind his cover while unarmed cohorts walk casually upright all around him. Wimp.

FILE - In this April 16, 2014 file photo, Gerald "Jerry" DeLemus, of Rochester, N.H., sits with a group of self-described militia members camping on rancher Cliven Bundy's ranch near Bunkerville, Nev. DeLemus is set to become the first person sentenced to federal prison on Wednesday, May 31, 2017, for his role in an armed confrontation with U.S. agents near Nevada rancher Cliven Bundy's ranch in 2014
LAS VEGAS (AP) A judge called a New Hampshire man a "bully vigilante" and sentenced him Wednesday to more than seven years in prison for his role organizing armed backers of Nevada rancher Cliven Bundy after a standoff with U.S. agents in 2014.
Gerald "Jerry" DeLemus became the first person sentenced for his ties to the confrontation that became a rallying cry for those who want vast stretches of federal land in the U.S. West put under local control. Eighteen others are in custody.
DeLemus has been jailed for almost 16 months, so the sentence means the 62-year-old former U.S. Marine will spend about six more years behind bars. His attorney, Dustin Marcello, said he will appeal.
DeLemus arrived at the Bundy ranch hours after the tense armed standoff that led to the release of the rancher's cattle and was hailed as a victory in a decades-long fight over government-owned land.

(3,408 posts)I hope that the Federal Prosecutor has a better plan when the Bundys face their second trial in Las Vegas. The prosecution of the Malheur Refuge occupation was catastrophe. While the grunts in camo are getting jail terms, the Bundys and the other ringleaders were aquitted. The shooting of LaVoy Finnicum generated too much sympathy, as the Federal Marshalls were less that truthful about the circumstances of his shooting.
I camped at the refuge a couple of weeks ago. The sandhill cranes were oblivious to the politics of the matter.

(4,286 posts)I think it was FBI agents and not Federal marshals who withheld some details about the Finincum shooting though. I also put some blame on the judge in that case. I thought she let the defense get away with a lot. She also allowed some of the jurors to conspire to get a juror replaced whom they thought was anti sov cit. That being said most of the blame goes to the morons on the jury. They didn't even convict the guy who stole a federal vehicle and drove it into Burns. That was a slam dunk no doubt about it case of theft.

(50,557 posts)According to the article, Jerry DeLemus was the co-chair of Trump's NH state veterans' coalition. He was also in federal prison.
Couldn't they have found someone to be a high-ranking official in his state campaign apparatus who WASN'T behind bars?
Hokie
(4,286 posts)That would have been after the NH primary. Yes, it took the FBI almost two years to get around to arresting the Bunkerville bunch of criminals. I don't recall reading that Delemus was ever fired or let go by the campaign however.

(50,557 posts)From the Bureau of Prisons' website:
Inmates are not allowed to receive packages from home without prior written approval from the inmate's unit team or authorized staff member at the institution. The only packages an inmate may receive from home are those containing release clothing and authorized medical devices. However, inmates may receive magazines, hard and paperback books directly from the publisher (For more information see: Policy on Incoming Publications ).
OTOH, there does not seem to be any prohibition on sending pictures of steaks made from the cattle he was trying to keep the government from confiscating.
