A self-proclaimed neo-Nazi arrested after agents found bomb-making materials in his Florida apartment planned to use the explosives to harm civilians, nuclear facilities and synagogues, federal prosecutors said.
The prosecutors made the allegations in court documents on Monday, a day before a judge set a $200,000 bond and conditions for the possible release of Brandon Russell, 21. The prosecutors want to keep Russell in jail before his trial, arguing that he poses a threat to the public after one of his roommates told authorities Russell was targeting the sites.
That roommate, Devon Arthurs, was arrested last month after telling police he fatally shot two other roommates, Jeremy Himmelman, 22, and Andrew Oneschuk, 18, because they were neo-Nazis who disrespected his recent conversion to Islam. Arthurs said he had also been part of a neo-Nazi group started by Russell called Atomwaffen until he converted to Islam. It was when police took Arthurs back to the apartment to check out his story that they say they found the bomb-making materials.
When they first arrived, they found Russell outside of the apartment crying. A member of the Florida National Guard, he was dressed in full military uniform and had just returned from duty.

(40,915 posts)Plot twist? A Muslim turned in a Christian(?) conservative terrorist?
Curiouser and curiouser this tale gets.
The two murders make it even more complicated.

(34,189 posts)There were four roommates, apparently all Neo-Nazis. One of them, Devon Arthurs, converted to Islam and decided that two of his Neo-Nazi roommates did not respect that conversion. (Who would have thought?!?) Arthurs killed two of his roommates.
The fourth roommate, Brandon Russell, was off being a Florida National Guardsman. When he returned, he was upset, crying, and sitting on the steps of the residence. Arthurs returned with the police to go over his story and when the apartment was searched the police found the bomb making materials which seem to have belonged to Brandon Russell.
For some reason the judge over the pre-trial hearing does not think that Brandon Russell is a danger to the community despite his ownership of the bomb making material. Of course he is Aryan looking and has not converted to Islam.

Arthurs claimed he committed the murders to prevent his roommates from "committing planned acts of domestic terrorism," according to a court document.

Remember when the Rethugs laughed when Janet Reno said Conservative White Hate groups were the biggest threat in America?
Back in those days, when I was a touch more naive, I was shocked that Rush Limbaugh and John Boehner tried to claim right-wing extremist militias as part of their party. It turns out they really are often indistinguishable from each other.
(And I think you mean Janet Napolitano in 2009, unless Ms. Reno also made this claim.)
