Israel removes metal detectors from holy site in Jerusalem

Source: The Guardian

Tuesday 25 July 2017 10.30 BST

Israel is removing controversial metal detectors from entrances to the sensitive compound that houses al-Aqsa mosque.

The move was announced late on Monday night by the office of the Israeli prime minister, Benjamin Netanyahu, and is designed to end the crisis over the holy site. Days of violent confrontations have claimed seven lives.

Despite the Israeli announcement, however, a senior Muslim cleric in Jerusalem said that worshippers should stay away from the shrine, pending a review of the new Israeli security arrangements there.

Ikrema Sabri, the head of the Supreme Islamic Committee in the city, said such a review might be completed later on Tuesday. Sabri said: “Our position is that for now, nobody should enter” the shrine.

NO other country would take the crap Israel is after two police officers were killed. Good to hear they're replacing those with even better technology. It's obvious the "protests" had nothing to do with those metal detectors. They get taken down and they're still complaining.

All it's done is lead to problems. At the VERY least, Jordan should have agreed to cameras.

millions of tourists visit these areas. It's never a good thing when "guards" treat every local like they are a criminal.

some archaeology groups have sifted through rubble when plumbing/road work is done and found wondrous things.

If I was king of the world I would order the entire area excavated like Pompeii or Rome for the history & mysteries.

That's the birthplace of the 3 'always fighting' religions and among some of the first civilizations when man walked out of Africa.

and it's only the Palestinians afraid they'll find Jewish ruins there that are stopping them. They've been turned down for decades on that request.
