EL PASO, Texas (AP) — The bodies of at least three people were recovered Tuesday after they drowned while trying to cross the Rio Grande from Mexico, federal and El Paso officials said.

The El Paso Fire Department water rescue team recovered the bodies of a teenage boy and girl and an adult woman on Tuesday, department spokesman Carlos Briano said.

All three were Guatemalan nationals, the Guatemalan Foreign Ministrysaid. Ministry spokesman Tekandi Paniagua said the boy was 16, the girl was 15 and the woman was 37.

"Our preliminary hypothesis is that, because of intense rains, the river's flow rose as they crossed it," Paniagua said.

2. Just got a new roof. The only one on the crew that spoke English was the guy I paid the money to.

Did a hell of a job. Tore off the old roof in under an hour, replaced the decking, installed new vents and chimneys, and reshingled the whole damn thing.

In six hours. With a lunch break. During which they played soccer in my back yard.

IIRC the toll was 1 penny going into US and free going into Mexico. Yeah, there was a border patrol agent there, but they rarely asked for anyones ID. Most of the time the Rio Grande was wadable in places, but flash floods do happen.

After not going over for quite a few years, I recently went-in the middle of the day, middle of the week and loved it. It was a different experience, everyone smiling & conducting day to day business among other Mexicans and far fewer tourists. I want to go back soon. Now that I live in southern NM, I don't have the opportunity as often & easily, but I can't wait to walk that bridge! If you're close by and can, come with me.
