Ex-Tulsa Officer Betty Shelby, Acquitted in Fatal Shooting, to Work for Sheriffs Office

TULSA, Okla. — A white former Tulsa police officer who resigned after being acquitted of manslaughter in the fatal shooting of an unarmed black man is going to work for the sheriff's office in a neighboring county.

Rogers County Sheriff Scott Walton told reporters in Tulsa that Betty Shelby will work for his office. He did not say what her duties will be, but he has scheduled a news conference for Thursday morning.

Shelby, 43, was found not guilty in May of manslaughter in the September shooting death of Terence Crutcher. Shelby was on patrol Sept. 16, 2016, when she shot Crutcher as he stood near his SUV in the middle of a Tulsa street.

She returned to the Tulsa Police Department in an administrative position, but resigned in July, saying she felt isolated from other officers. Walton is a former Tulsa police officer and a vocal supporter of Shelby as she awaited trial.

I guess this is the Tulsa Police way of saying that even they knew Shelby fucked up and it was an unlawful shooting... I'm guessing her ass will be glued to a chair and she'll run out the clock with clerical duties until her pension kicks in...

which is why it's so perverse to see folks like Darren Wilson get $600k or whatever it was in "donations" he didn't need, in addition to the $500k he got from ABC for his primetime softball interview...

Who knew killing us would be so profitable? This is only going to encourage more cops to open fire...


And FWIW, it's easy to say "I don't want to do police work anymore" when you've already been removed from duty and almost certainly asked in private to resign.

for herself. She has no business carrying a gun and her fellow officers know it. She feels isolated but not nearly as much as her victim.

Why isn't there pressure from unions on police to be less anti minority in their interactions with the public?

Some have said bad police behavior will only stop when it begins to cost the entities they work for. It seems to be costing the police unions. But where's the push to stop bad behavior?

6. It works the same in other fields.

A teacher's accused of something and the verdict from whatever process used to evaluate the claim says "not guilty," often the teacher can't continue to work there. They get assigned elsewhere or just move on.

A couple of years ago one such teacher had the gall to use the word "negro" in class. It was a Spanish class, but the response when people read that first sentence was fairly widespread for all that. She even contrasted it with "moreno" for people, saying "negro" is not the word used to describe people. Didn't matter. Some people heard "negro" and their knees couldn't jerk quickly enough in saying "racist".

Another teacher was hired and said that she'd done some modeling years before. The modeling was for bathing suits. One piece bathing suits. Yet after a few years some student found the pictures, spread them around, and between catcalls and other rude comments from student, and questions from parents, she was let go. The administration knew about the modeling, it wasn't X-rated or even particularly R-rated, but community response diminished her effectiveness as a teacher and as a representative of the school.

(I've known teachers who were asked to move on because they were wearing school spirit shirts when they had a bit too much to drink at a nearby restaurant Friday afternoon during happy hour. For some jobs, your life isn't truly private. It's not fair. But it's community opinion and attitude. PR. Even if the allegation is false, you're thrown under the bus.)
