PETA to pay family $49,000 for euthanizing 9-year-old girls dog

Source: NY Daily News

PETA apologized to a Virginia family and said it will pay them thousands of dollars for taking and euthanizing their pet Chihuahua.

Wilber Zarate filed a lawsuit against the People for Ethical Treatment of Animals for taking his 9-year-old daughter’s dog from their mobile park home and then putting the pooch down ahead of the state’s mandatory five-day grace period.

A pair of women affiliated with the animal rights group said they traveled to the Accomack mobile park in 2014 because its owner asked for help capturing wild dogs and feral cats. While there, they removed the leash and picked up an unattended Chihuahua named Maya — she’d been a Christmas gift for Zarate’s daughter, Cynthia.

The pup was put down the same day despite a law that requires such organizations wait five days before euthanizing animals. PETA paid a $500 fine for the violation.

3. considers pet ownership to be a form of involuntary bondage.

death is liberating....to many mentally ill fanatics.

If PETA people want to be vegan and not keep pets, that's their own choice. They shouldn't force that on other people.

4. PETA at one time insisted that all service dogs be taken

away from their owners and euthanized. After that the disabled should not be allowed service animals. They claimed making an animal be a service animal was cruel. What a bunch of fucks.

18. Service dogs are probably the most loved dogs by their owners.

I never knew PETA was this crazy. WTF???

20. The bond between a service dog and their owners are on an entirely

different level than a pet or even a companion animal. I know my connection with my service dog was that strong. I have companion animals now and even though they help a lot it is an entirely different relationship. I wish I could direct to a link about PETA doing that but it has been so long since they tried that.

5. PETA does things that are so fucking stupid...

That I wonder every day if they aren't being funded and encouraged by people who wish to discredit other organizations that hope for the better treatment of all animals, human and otherwise.

9. PETA should not be allowed to "put down ANY animals"

and the local authorities in Virginia should immediately shut down that PETA animal shelter.
(Of the 2,000 animals they had in their shelter in 2016, they killed 1,400)
.
Why did they kill the Chihuahua the same day they illegally took it from the owner?
Couldn't they at least have TRIED to find it a home?
If they had waited a few days, the 9-year-old girl would probably have gotten her dog back.
(PETA should stick to exposing animal abuse at factory farms)

I'd like to know what PETA spokesman Mike Farrell (MASH) thinks about this tragic killing of a perfectly healthy pet Chihuahua.

11. I agree that PETA should focus on factory farming

You aren't going to get the whole planet to become vegan. It just isn't going to happen. But we certainly could move away from factory farming and processing to more humane and sustainable methods. That is an achievable goal.

15. Factory farms are not going away, however, they can be run more humanely than they are now

Dr. Temple Grandin, professor of animal science at Colorado State University, has advised many large factory farms on how to run their operations more humanely.
(It can actually save the factory farms money as well).
The cows, pigs, sheep etc don't have to be hit with clubs when they fall down
They don't have to use fork lifts to painfully lift up animals that have fallen down.
There are humane methods to slaughter cows, pigs, sheep etc; and ALL factory farms should employ those methods...and the same goes for factory chicken & turkey farms as well.

Temple Grandin has become a prominent author and speaker on both autism and animal behavior.

A TV movie was made about Dr. Grandin called "Temple Grandin" (2010) with Claire Danes

I shy away from Peta, although I have gotten recipes from their website. I don't like their euthanization stance or their bullshit about pit bulls.

27. they don't believe in the concept of companion animals.

They think it is wrong for anyone to have a pet. They don't care how many they have to kill.

because I help them (TNR, feeding etc.) disapprove.

They benefit from being cared for. I ensure they all are spayed and neutered.

19. Feral dogs are different than cats.

In dallas they've had issues with loose dogs making packs and attacking people. It's different than feral cats. I also TNR cats.

28. Yes

doing TNR actually keeps more cats out of an area because the existing ones maintain their territories (reason to not trap and euthanize for those who are so inclined).

I've lived in my present home for two years. When I moved in to this rural area I found that there was a small number of ferals in the vicinity. So, I began trapping, then getting the cats sterlized.

If the ferals are tameable when trapped I keep them as indoor pets or find homes for them. The ones who would have a difficult time indoors or are otherwise just too wild I release back outside. So far, they have all stayed in the vicinity and come around every evening to be fed. They have a decent quality of life but of course face more dangers outdoors.

Last year I trapped four juvenile females before their first estrus. Those were the only females I knew of. As a result, this year: no kittens!!! So, the population is stabilizing and not increasing.

Take that, PETA.

They're on the same level as people who send Benny Hinn money and would be aghast if they knew what was done with it.
