Fox News falsely implies Obama curtailing military voting in Ohio

A Fox News report Friday night suggested that the Democratic National Committee and President Obamas campaign were suing to strip voting privileges from members of the military and their families in Ohio, even though the lawsuit in no way cuts back on that groups voting rights.
If President Obama gets his way, the special voting rights of some of Americas finest will be eliminated, host Shannon Bream said. The campaign is suing to keep members of the military from having extra time to cast their ballots in one key battlegound state.
In actuality, the complaint filed by the Obama campaign would reinstate special voting rights that, until recently, extended to all Ohioans and not just those serving in the armed forces.
The issue stems from the Republican-controlled legislatures decision late last year to alter early voting procedures. In the past, all voters could cast ballots in the days immediately prior to the election. But under the new law, only members of the military would be allowed to vote through the Monday immediately before the election, while early voting for non-military citizens would end the previous Friday.

(150 posts)This is typical of the Fox not News organization. Blatant lying and intentional dissemination of misinformation should be illegal. If it were Fox would lose their FCC license the first day or dramatically change their ways. The way this was reported by them should in itself be news reported by the rest of the media as to what blatant falsehoods they are perpetrating. Fox does more damage to democracy in America than Al Queda could ever dream of.

..........Fox News doesn't feel like rules such as fairness, accuracy, neutrality, and independence apply, which is obvious since Fox News breaks those rules with stunning regularity. In fact, its programming day seems designed to break the traditional rules ad nauseam. That's what it's built to do. And if nothing else, Fox News is ruthlessly efficient...........

(1,309 posts)As a combat veteran, I would like to say that way too much attention is focused on the sacrifices of our military as a ploy to discredit the patriotism of the democratic party and to justify the military industrial complex which is allied with the republican s.
While believing the actions of our sons and daughters in answering our nation's call to duty is commendable, we must not let that sentiment be used to diminish the rights due others in this country or to be used as a ruse to increase military contractor profits and subsequent investment in republican candidacies.
As a soldier in Vietnam, I loved this country and it's extension of civil rights, it's extension of voting rights, it's attempts to increase voting and representation of all in our system. I hear so often welcome home- but today this is not the home I left. It has become the home of the very rich and everyone else is unwelcome except as their slaves. It has become a land where two jobs are not enough, a system which intentionally creates havoc and uncertainty about job loss as a method of control. It sadedns me to see this ands I work hard to change these things.
But what bothers me most is the use of my service anjd that of other combat veterans as an image in the mind of our supporters to deny the will of the people by restricting voter rights of any citizen. I get so upset with statements of how we have earned privileges as if we are somehow better than other Americans. I am sick of the lies spread by republicans to get tax breaks for the military and restrict access to voting by so many with their divide and conquer strategies. I am proud that I came from a country which has a tradition of inclusiveness but ashamed that our very constitution and the will of the majority of the American people is being subverted to serve right wing ambition.
As a former serviceman, I want the best for all and that best requires equal treatment under the law. Obama's lawsuit attempts to meet that requirement and as service men and women we should support that lawsuit if we truly love the country..

(159 posts)Yeah, I just got told by my brother-in-law, who watches FOX constantly, that Obama is trying to keep the military from voting. You can't argue with stupid and FOX knows this; so if they say it enough, stupids will believe it.

These folks are going to do whatever they think is necessary to sway the weak minds of the right. The Texas educational philosophy that was published and discussed on this site is more wide spread than just Texas.
Thinking people will never vote for the current right wing party.
