Abbott: Trump won't travel to Houston during his Texas visit

President Donald Trump will not visit Houston during his trip Tuesday to Texas to survey the damage caused by Hurricane Harvey, Texas Gov. Greg Abbot said, adding that the president will instead be closer to where the hurricane hit land.
The place he will be going to will not be Houston so [he] will not be getting into harms way or interrupting the evacuations or emergency response in the Houston area, Abbott said Monday on CBS This Morning. He most likely will be going closer to where the hurricane hit land.
The White House announced on Sunday that Trump will travel to Texas Tuesday but didnt provide the locations where he is set to visit.
Extensive flooding from Hurricane Harvey devastated parts of Texas over the weekend and is responsible for at least five deaths. About 30,000 people are expected to be housed in emergency shelters.

(50,562 posts)At this point in the recovery cycle, VIP visits are the last thing they need to contend with.
During Hurricane Andrew relief my Army unit was running the best refugee camp in Florida. The authorities just LOVED our refugee camp and how well it was being operated. When President Bush came down, that's where they took him*. They waited until a month after the hurricane hit before dropping that mess on us.
I'm sorta surprised Trump hasn't already run down there.

(57,597 posts)Full disclosure: I have never seen the point of having a president from either party visit the site of a natural disaster. The visit serves only to tie up personnel whose time would be better spent taking care of problems.

Austin's blue.
Houston's still in the midst of the problem: Harvey's going to dump more rain tomorrow. It's unclear how much, the estimates have gone all fuzzy again; it depends on some things that we can't confidently predict.

(20,211 posts)48 hours ago I got 18 inches of rain in the previous 24 hours. Now I've only gotten 5 inches in the last 24 hours. I live on the west side of town about 2 miles from Barker Dam. They started a controlled release of water about 12 hours ago and so far it hasn't affected nearby Buffalo Bayou. It is VERY high, but it hasn't risen in over 24 hours. So, right now, I'm feeling very lucky.
