No, the shark picture isnt real: A running list of Harveys viral hoaxes

The shark picture is fake

Any time you see a picture of a shark swimming down a street — or in a subway station, or what have you — after a major flooding event, be suspicious. Fake shark pictures, often the work of photo editing, are the most inevitable visual viral hoax in a disaster like this, to the point that it’s almost become a meme.

The shark is not swimming down the street. It was not swimming down the (same) street during Hurricane Matthew. It wasn’t swimming in the aftermath of Sandy. And most of the other pictures of sharks swimming where people were are fake too.

Obama is not serving food to evacuees in Texas right now

A viral, now-deleted tweet claimed to show former president Barack Obama serving hot meals to those evacuated from the floods in Texas.

“Something you’ll never see Trump do: Obama is in Texas serving meals!,” the tweet read. While the photo is real, the context is fake – it’s not a recent photo of Obama, and it has nothing to do with the former president’s response to Harvey.

Be wary of photochops. With that said, we definitely have alligators on the loose.

and not let their guard down because of some pranksters sharing fake shark pics. There are things in Texas flood waters that can kill you.

And hopefully the spiders and frogs will do their jobs to murder as many mosquitoes as they can before Trump cuts off travel from Texas due to diseases.

While sharks don't show up after rain (sharks don't fall from the sky), bull sharks can go further up rivers and waterways that have ocean access because the extra water makes them not understand they are in the wrong place.

Stop sharing photoshopped images of sharks in flooded city streets. Sharing fake news hurts America. Do better.

How to tell if a “shark in flooded city streets after a storm” photo is a fake in 5 easy steps

David Shiffman

....
3) Upload the image itself to Google Image and see what pops up. Did you know you can use Google Image search to look not for a keyword, but for a photo itself? Really, you can. And it’s amazing. Check it out:

....
5) Just assume that the picture is a fake. You’ll be right most of the time. To the best of my knowledge, there has never been a confirmed photo of a shark swimming in city streets following a storm, though please feel free to correct me in the comments.A shark tank did recently collapse (the sharks died quickly and were never swimming through the building), and a flood did result in sharks entering a golf course’s water hazard, but neither of those are the same thing as a shark swimming through the streets of a city.
....

Author’s note: It’s extremely difficult in the case of “viral images” to determine who took the original photo, which is why I have not attributed most of these to a photographer. If anyone knows (and can prove) who took any of the original photos, I’ll happily add the photographer’s name to the photo captions.
