Harvey horror: Shivering tot found clinging to drowned mom

Source: CBS News

BEAUMONT, Texas -- Authorities found a shivering toddler clinging to the body of her drowned mother in a rain-swollen canal in Southeast Texas after the woman tried to carry her child to safety from Harvey's floods.

Capt. Brad Penisson, of the fire-rescue department in Beaumont, said the woman's vehicle then got stuck in the flooded parking lot. Squalls from Harvey were pounding Beaumont with up to 2 inches of rain an hour at the time with 38 mph gusts, according to the National Weather Service.

Penisson said a witness saw the woman take her 18-month-old daughter and try to walk to safety when the swift current of a flooded drainage canal next to the parking lot swept them both away.

Penisson said the child was in stable condition at Christus St. Elizabeth Hospital. KFDM says the tot appeared to be suffering from hypothermia

How scary for that poor child. You wonder what you would do under similar circumstances. What would be a wise decision for the mother to make?

That would really suck right now, but I didn't find any news articles on Google about that except for Breitbart.

Alligators and poisonous snakes from some type of alligator refuge. It's a tourist draw. They were saying that those types of alligators are more dangerous because they will approach people, since they have been fed by people observing them. Wild alligators are more shy and will leave you alone if you don't bother them. I wouldn't want to test out either theory. I have no interest in observing them in any sense of the word. Snakes are no argument in my book. No way would I get in that water like these poor people have had to do.

That's absolutely heartbreaking. So much desperation and despair down there. I am glad they found the little one. A mother will do whatever it takes to save her child.

whose mother died to save her.

Everyone here at DU, make a donation to the American Red Cross online. I did yesterday. I gave generously because I have friends in and around Houston. These are our fellow Americans regardless of where they stand politically.

It's the very least we can do.

And that's what they're asking for. They say they have more than enough clothes and blankets now.
