Officer who told driver we only kill black people will be fired

The Georgia police officer who was captured on video comforting a woman he pulled over by telling her we only kill black people will be fired, according to the department's police chief.
Cobb County Police Chief Mike Register said Thursday, Theres really no place for these types of comments in law enforcement," adding that the officer in question, Lt. Greg Abbott, would be terminated, according to the New York Post.
The footage, which was originally shot last year at a traffic stop, was leaked earlier this week and received widespread backlash.

(58,785 posts)This may be very unfortunate. We may have lost a good cop. At least this one was willing to admit our nation has a problem.
Flaleftist
(3,473 posts)That's the opposite of what a lot of cops would have done. Some people here are pretty quick to group him with the cops that really do abuse their power.

(3,473 posts)It was a comment meant for her to try to get her to calm down. That was his intent. Police need better training at de-escalating situations but it looks like that is all he was trying to do. If he had better training he might have used a different technique. But he didn't immediately go for his taser when she wouldn't comply, which is what a worse cop would have done. It wasn't a Facebook or Twitter post, which is what people appear to be treating it like. I guess just see the situation a little differently than others.

(1,865 posts)How would suggesting he only kills people of another color calm a person down? What if this person was married to an African American person? What if this person had a mixed race child that looked like an African American person? How is this appropriate in ANY situation?

Is that how that works?
Our national corruption is despicable.
John Oliver did a story on the police and many cops with records of this sort of conduct simply moved on to other police departments. Police are also encouraged to delete their records as well.

(1,105 posts)He allowed his frustration to get control of his mouth. He was dealing with a woman who was petrified that if she made one wrong move he might shoot her. An understandable reaction on her part. He just wanted her to do what he needed her to do so he could finish the traffic stop and get on with his business. In frustration he sarcastically said something incredibly stupid.
Like you said wryter2000, we've got cops out there shooting people, most of whom it appears are people of color, they get exonerated and left on the force. This guy says something boneheaded and stupid and gets fired.
You tell me how this makes sense.

(157 posts)You posted a link to the Utah cop involved in the nurse situation. And keep in mind the Utah cop was only fired from his part-time paramedic job. He's still employed as a detective with the Salt Lake City police department and will still be employed after they complete their "investigation".

Trying to gain compliance and avoid making an arrest by saying we only kill black people. Seriously?

(3,473 posts)He was trying to calm her down. It is a touchy subject to joke about, but he wasn't being abusive toward her and I haven't seen any reports of a history of misconduct from this officer.

(1,865 posts)than your race is no way to calm anyone down. When you are carrying a gun and in a position of power it is never funny to joke about killing anyone.

(13,040 posts)have you watched this video? The guy should not be in law enforcement with those racist remarks. I'm glad he's fired.

(3,473 posts)He could use force or he could try to de-escalate. The latter is the better option. He chose that option. He could have done a better job, used different words. But without other evidence of him being an abusive cop, I see poor judgement and not necessarily one of the bad apples that beats, shoots, and frames people. Some kind of disciplinary action may be appropriate, but termination for this incident alone, IMO, is a little severe. I see I'm in the minority opinion here and I don't particularly care for defending cops. I'm usually on the other side in these threads. Maybe I need to think about this one some more. I'll just say cops need much better training.
JonLP24
(29,322 posts)They were encouraged to do so in an internal video by the Mesa police chief I posted in a John Oliver video up-thread which isn't to say he had something on his record then deleted it. I'm just saying a lack of records could be explained that way. Considering she was frightened force would have been completely unnecessary so I don't see force as an option at all.
If it was me a cop saying that would have frightened me even more but I think he was probably actually telling the truth rather than joking because he was referencing the videos saying that they're all black.
