Residents and visitors evacuating South Florida ahead of Hurricane Irma wont have to pay tolls starting at 5 p.m. Tuesday.
A spokeswoman for Gov. Rick Scott told the Herald/Times the governors order applies to all Florida roadways and toll systems until further notice.
Scott said in a statement he wants to keep traffic flowing.
Ensuring the safety of Florida families and visitors is our top priority and suspending tolls statewide will help people quickly evacuate and make it easier for all Floridians to access important hurricane supplies to ensure they are fully prepared, Scott said.

(32,633 posts)They can't expect toll collectors to stay behind and risk their lives doing a non-essential job.
Really only the medical, EMS and law-enforcement people will stay behind, the rest should all leave the area.
Best of luck to everyone in the path of this enormous hurricane. Stay safe!

(8,360 posts)It's all toll-by-plate. We can use a pre-paid transponder that blinks whenever we go through a toll booth area. Where the transponder isn't recognized, a photo is taken of the license plate and the State sends a bill at the end of the month. On I 75 there is usually at least one toll lane for those who want to pay with cash. I suppose that is where the suspension of tolls would be most useful.
