UPDATED - Trump suggested scrapping future debt ceiling votes to congressional leaders

President Donald Trump suggested to congressional leaders on Wednesday morning that votes to raise the debt ceiling could be done away with altogether, according to three people familiar with the conversation.

In a meeting with GOP and Democratic leaders, in which Trump sided with the Democrats on a fiscal deal to raise the debt ceiling, the president said he believes the votes are unproductive, those people said. Many lawmakers dread the vote, particularly Republicans, some of whom disagree with attempts to raise the debt ceiling without major fiscal reforms.

With Congress set to lift the debt ceiling into December as part of the deal, Trump floated the idea that the next time Congress votes to raise the debt ceiling, it could be the last. He said conversations should happen over the next three months, according to people in the room.

Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-N.Y.) raised the topic with Trump, a source familiar with the conversation said. "Let's do it," Trump replied, the source recounted.

UPDATE:

Trump, Schumer agree to pursue plan to repeal the debt ceiling

By Damian Paletta and Ashley Parker September 7 at 12:25 PM

President Trump and Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer have agreed to pursue a deal that would permanently remove the requirement that Congress repeatedly raise the debt ceiling, three people familiar with the decision said.

Trump and Schumer discussed the idea Wednesday during an Oval Office meeting. Schumer, Trump, and House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi (D.–Calif.) agreed to work together over the next several months to see if they can finalize a plan, which would need to be approved by Congress.

One of the people familiar described it as a “gentlemen’s agreement.” Senate Democrats are hopeful they can finalize an arrangement with Trump by December.

“The President encouraged Congressional leaders to find a more permanent solution to the debt ceiling so the vote is not so frequently politicized,” said White House press secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders.

That's a right wing talking point you should be aware of. The debt ceiling merely give authority to borrow money to cover expenditures already authorized by the budget or a CR.

This isn't a vote on whether to borrow money. It's a vote on whether to pay it back.

Congress controls spending and borrowing. It's nonsensical for them to authorize spending and then play with default dynamite afterwards when borrowing is needed.

It's not a blank check to borrow money. It's a blank check to pay for obligations that the country has already committed to. Raising the debt limit always passes, because it would be a total disaster if it didn't. It no longer serves any purpose except to be used as a political football by the right.

The debt ceiling votes have been nothing but political Russian Roulette. They need to go.

It should be abolished, and be just like any other normal and routine function of government. Since Trump is of a mind to work with Democrats, at least for the moment, Schumer and Pelosi should get a bill ready to move forward for his signature.

The Republicans are so frightened that Trump will unleash his bully boys and goons on their next reelection efforts, they might whine and mutter, but in the end they will have to kowtow to his demands.

Which is all he actually cares about. He doesn't care what the wins are. Schumer and Pelosi are taking advantage of golden opportunities here.

Mr. Dealmaker has been known many times to renege on paying construction contract obligations just because he felt the cost was too high...after the fact. Essentially, he likes to declare a cost ceiling after committing to the work.

Why isn't he trying to pull that off here? Hell, just tell people like Lockheed he doesn't like the job they do, so only pay them 75% of contract. Sue me!!
