Lawmakers want to banish Confederate statues from US Capitol

WASHINGTON (AP) — Democratic lawmakers have introduced a measure to remove Confederate statues from the U.S. Capitol.

New Jersey Sen. Cory Booker and California Rep. Barbara Lee introduced the measure Thursday in the House and Senate.

The lawmakers proposed the Confederate Monument Removal Act after the violence in Charlottesville. There are now statues of Gen. Robert E. Lee, Jefferson Davis and about 10 other Confederate figures in the National Statuary Hall Collection.

Booker says the statues belong in a museum where they can be put into proper historical context. He says they are "painful" symbols of "bigotry and hate" and go against the goal of making the Capitol a place for "all Americans to come and feel welcomed."

These are monuments to Republican traitors, the repukes want these monuments and statues left up to remind the rest of us that they are the heirs to the confederacy and their underlying agenda is one of white supremacy.
The Republican Party is built on the ashes of the confederacy and without the crimes and carpetbaggers and 150 years of intimidation of the black southern underclass they would not be in power today.
From the Rotunda to the face of Stone Mountain we must remove these monuments to our tragic rascist past. Removing these monuments could usher in a new age of healing within our great nation.

Perhaps it is time to treat that terrorist insurgency the same way Germany treats speech re: national socialists. Relics of a violent society serve no purpose, and only prolong suffering by the people still directly impacted by their actions to this day.

Good riddance, and don't let the door hit ya on the way out.

It's simply taking memorials to traitors out of our nation's capital, and putting them in a museum.

I never really understood how some can see them as anything other than harassing monuments to traitors? The fact that they were constructed during the civil rights era speaks volumes. This guy will never be memorializing a terrorist insurgency that caused many Americans to die.

Unfortunately, there are more and more in this country who would love to see those events repeated. It pisses me off, because I'd love to see the world move on to bigger and better things. Like curing disease, ending hunger and creating a global/inclusive society. We have the technology and resources to do all of that, and much much more. Sadly, some would rather cling to dead ideals rather than embrace progress.

The only comforting fact is that history has shown progress to be inevitable. Looking forward to that day! Until then, I will be sure to hit the polls for every single election. Whether its national, state or local matters - I'm always there casting my vote.
