House Republican causes stir claiming female lawmaker 'doesnt know a damn thing'

Rep. Don Young (R-Alaska) was forced to apologize on Thursday after he lashed out at Rep. Pramila Jayapal (D-Wash.) in unusually personal terms during House floor debate late in the evening.

During consideration of a government spending package for 2018, Young was offering an amendment regarding wildlife management on national preserves in his state of Alaska.

After Jayapal, a liberal freshman representing Seattle, spoke in opposition to his amendment, Young snapped that she "doesn't know a damn thing what she's talking about."

He then questioned Jayapal's motives by accusing her of parroting talking points from a special interest group, rather than expressing her true opinion.

He did apologize in what seemed like a sincere manner, and she accepted--AFTER she called him out on his sexist bullshit.

Personal attacks in the House of Commons are forbidden. In the 1930s, a Labour MP made a personal attack on Winston Churchill during a debate in the House. He was called on the carpet by Clement Attlee, the head of the Labour party, and after being chewed out, was told to go to Churchill and apologize in person.

He went to Churchill's house, and announced himself to the butler, who told him to wait while he looked for Churchill. The butler found Churchill seated on the toilet, and told him that the Labourite was there to see him. Churchill responded, "Tell him I'm on the jakes, and can only take care of one shit at a time."

He fires the full broadside at Congress this time every year, for at least twenty years and probably closer to 45 years, usually over trapping issues, and often at Washington(state)'s Members, because for some reason they often take the lead in using the appropriations bills to try to limit trapping in Alaska.

As usual this article doesn't bother to describe what Young's amendment is, what it would do, or what Rep. Japapal's comments actually were, which is the usual state of American legislative reporting. If the article can't get any of that down correctly or at all, we should be extremely skeptical about how "unusual" it is. I watched it year after year after year. The annual article about it just appears to be cast in such a way as to annoy a broader audience, this time.

Jeez on a Pogo Stick - Nixon in office, Viet Nam, Roe vs. Wade acted on by Supreme Court, The Godfather wins academy award, etc. and Don King is elected Rep. from Alaska.

Time to retire , Don.
